A friend of mine has a the rear lens cap stuck on the lens. This is an inexpensive kit lens for a Nikon 5200. It does not come off by twisting, heating with a hair dryer or cooling in the refrigerator. And yes, I tried twisting it counterclockwise when looking at the back of the lens.

Any ideas other than brute force?

Heating it with a hair dryer should have softened it enough to get it off. As it cooled, it may have slightly melted to the metal mount. You can always try cutting it off with with a hack saw. CAREFULLY cut across the diameter of the cap just enough to cut through to the lens mount. You should be able to split the cap in two pieces & get it off.

Nikon lenses twist on the other way. To get it off turn to the right,.

Actually, I had the blow torch out already. Not to restart the Canon versus Nikon debate, but Canon comes off by turning to the left. Another reason for buying Canon, Mr. Nikonian.

Nikon always had to be different. I think everybody else turns right as well. I shoot Sony but, Nikon & Canon make very good equipment. That's why Baskin-Robbins serves 31 delicious flavors. I HATE strawberry ice cream.

Actually Nikon has used that exact same mount since 1957, always turning clockwise even when they were making the lenses for Canons cameras. Canon chose to change the rotation direction when they finally started making their own lenses, just to be different.

Had a 62 Chevie Pickup. Needed to check brakes, passenger side went fine, but the drivers side was as hard as that lens for the same reason. I had fought with that #$^@!x thing for an hour, heating red hot, cooling with oil to soak in, extended wrench.... and like a vision... I saw the "L" on the end of the bolt. Turning the nut clockwise the nut came off with ease. Live and learn.

MT. I would like to know why the Nikon mounts always turn clockwise to take off the lens and the caps. Usually to take off a cap from a bottle or to unscrew a crew ( common things) you go to the left and to tighten go to the right. Its a special reason why they do that?. How it's done in Sony, Pentax and other brands?

That's funny - and from a Canon shooter.

Remember when Chrysler used reverse threads on their lug nuts on one side of the car. I bet that caused lots of problems.

Now I really give up. Before my head explodes.
