Hope I'm doing this right as I have not hosted before...I may need someone to step in on Saturday as my son is on a 600 mile bicycle trip and I think we may head out to find him. This subject is dear to my heart because i am so curious about where everyone else lives. Basically, introduce us to your town...if you live in a very rural area then show us your neighborhood, favorite hang-outs, whatever is unique, different...or what really identifies your home town. If someone wanted to move there ...what sites would you show them?? Even just street shots will work...just try to give us a feel of where you live. Add a description on your posting..maybe some facts ....in any case..Have fun!! And Welcome to Anchorage, Alaska!

Laska, you're hitting chords in me.

I used to work in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Now, after the Battle on the Plains of Abraham when Capt. Cook had shown how to navigate the St. Lawrence river, where the river narrows (in Mik'maq, the word for where the river narrows is Quebec), the English naval or military lords had won a settlement from France to turn over part of the lands in Newfoundland previously controlled by them. 1st they wanted all of the lands around Newfoundland surveyed. & Cook was given the job. Suffice it to say, you might enjoy googling for "Cook Monument, Corner Brook, NL." Newfoundland is also where Cook learned how to go without fresh food and not get scurvy. & of course, that's how he managed to go on all of those other, longer voyages.

Now, your challenge name. You see there's one 'town' I've been meaning to tackle, photo wise. Only, to do so meant getting up EARLY, for daylight, but little traffic.

So, to next post.

The Overview.

If you're in PEI and you say, "I'm going to town", you mean you're going to Charlottetown (Ch'town), the capital city, which really is 35,000 or so people.

In winter that means 145,800+ will shop or do business in Ch'town fairly often. In summer add 20,000*

I had managed to get some shots on May 15 and then again this morning. I left home @ 5:15 am and drove through fog until I reached Ch'town, when the sun came out. Overall, I got about 190 shots and didn't leave town until 11:00 a.m.

* I got that figure by going to a meeting of a PEI heritage foundation last night (tonight since I haven't managed to sleep). The person who concluded summer increase in population is at least 20,000 on any given day brought quite a few facts and figures one should consider into our talk. He certainly convinced me that he's quite the mathematician and led me to think his reasoning logical.

Captain Cook was a colorful explorer...I read a biography of him..for a history of Alaska class in college when I was getting my teaching degree and my BA in History. Can't wait to see what you post! You seem to have a feel for history too!

My home town, Barnstaple in North Devon, England, is an old Medieval merchant town - it was a busy port exporting wool and as that trade fell away it became a centre of manufacture - lace, gloves, sail-cloth and fishing-nets; it had extensive potteries, tanneries, sawmills and foundries, and shipbuilding was also carried on until the early 20th C.
Sadly the river silted up and trade went to nearby Bideford and gradually most of the manufacturing has disappeared.
There are many Almshouses built by wealthy merchants, some lovely houses again built by these merchants - now listed so they will not be altered and have to be maintained in a good condition. Sadly nowadays the town is rather run down with many out-of-town shopping centres leaving empty shops on the high street which are filled with charity shops, coffee shops or Banks/Building Societies!
However, North Devon is a lovely area in which to live - we have the sea and the moors to explore and the climate on the whole is pleasant.
