Why is the Grass always yellow?

Hi everyone, I just joined Ugly Hedgehog about a week ago and just love it. I enjoy reading all the questions followed by expert answers. I'm sure I will be asking some questions as I have only been serious about photogaphy for a short time. I have always enjoyed it, but just became serious about it recently. I have made a lot of pic's and made a lot of mistakes. The biggest problem I seem to have is, the grass and trees always seem to come out yellow. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any advise

Can't tell you why the trees & grass are yellow... But if you go to FastStone.org, they have a great (free) editor that can help you. I use it all the time. It's very powerful and can help fix all sorts of problems.

Does the grass look yellow in the LCD? If so, take it to a camera store and have the cameral checked.

You don't say what you are using but if a 'point and shoot' it most likely wont take RAW so the colors should be great if on Auto.

Have you printed any or looked at them on different monitors?

It may be that the display for your computer needs calibration.

Also if you are in some of the area of country i hear about, maybe the grass IS yellow .. just kidding. :-)

Hang in there .. these are fun challenges and all solvable.

If you are California's central valley, it's because they are yellow.

I don't know why your grass is yellow could you post a couple of your shots so we can see. As a former michiganian who had a dog I can tell you why the snow is yellow.

It would be great if you could post a description of your gear. Also, are other greens faded to yellow in your shots or just landscape shots?

Yellow is a prime color component of grass. It is more yellow than it appears, even when it looks green. Photoshop can easily "fix" the yellow appearance.

Use Selective Color, click on the grass, adjust the sliders until just the grass seems selected, feather it a bit, click OK. Then use the Hue Adjustment, select greens (or all) and slide the Hue slider. For bad looking grass with greens, browns, and yellows, you MIGHT consider recoloring it, also in the Hue Adjustment control.

Sorry this is a Photoshop fix... It's just what I use.

Bingo!

ALSO, when you overexpose trees and grass, which can happen with an automatic meter, which sees the world not ALWAYS the way it should be exposed, they will turn yellow. Automatic metering tends to LIGHTEN predominantly DARK things, like forests, if you're in one or looking at one, close, with your camera.

Foliage, in sunlight, when a foreground "in the sun" object is properly exposed, may even show up nearly BLACK. Used to be a problem when we shot slide film, like the late, great Kodachrome.

I am using a Canon Rebel T1i.....I just got a fillter, thinking it would take the yellow out, but it is not any better than without it. I have a lot to learn about my camera and continue to learn little bits and I go along. I love this website and have picked up several very good suggestions. I do appreciate any info I can get. I just wish I had someone to sit down with me for about a day and teach me all about it.

I love this. It is getting pretty yellow here. No rain in the past two months, so you can imagine what it looks like, but actually that is not my problem. Even when I am making pictures where the grass, trees, etc are very green, they still have a yellow tint. Does the sun do it, maybe?

Get the book "Understanding Exposure" by bryan peterson. In easy to understand language he explains all about f stops shutter speeds iso etc and teaches you not only the technicaly correct exposure but the most creative one as well. Should be available on amazon or local book store. It is one of 2 books EVERY photographer should own and read. The other book is "learning to see creatively" by the same author. My work has improved a 1000% since reading and applying those books. Also for your camera I would recomend the magic lanterrn guide for your particular camera. It will explain every feature without reading like a manual. the book is small enough to carry in your camera bag to refer to when neccessary. njust read your last post, I like a previous respondent to your post suspect that your monitor needs to be recalibrated. You can pick up what you need at best buy. Unless you are printing these photos at home and they have a tint to them. It would be much easier to help if you could post some examples

Thanks to everyone for all the responses. I have appreciated and enjoyed all of them, especially those who like to kid:}}}}}. I would like to upload some pictures but I have not been able to get them uploaded for some reason. Don't know why.
Also, I do have Photoshop, but I haven't learned a lot about how to use it yet. It would have been great if a manual or guide had come with it. I am struggling along with it, so hopefully, someday I will get it. Tried to find a Tech School that offered a course on it, but our Local one doen't offer it. I just learned how to close a picture after working on it. I still have a bunch of pic's in the Organizer that I can't figure out how to get rid of. Anyway, thanks everyone. There seems to be a lot of willing people out there to offer help when the plea goes out. I am enjoying Ugly Hedgehog. Lot's of good info comes thru it.
