So what IS the top camera if I may ask? My 7D I have been very pleased but just looking for something that shoots high quality pics, and is lighter. The 7D is kind of hard on the neck after awhile, and my SX50 is ok but it lacks in quality on some shots as compared to the 7D. I think the Sony a7 or a7r would fit my needs good.

Norm, if you go to DxOMARK:

http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Ratings

they rate the Nikon D800E at 96, the highest score ever in their testing.

The Sony A7R scores a 95... just a little less than the D800E, ironic considering the fact that the A7R, D800 and D800E all share the SAME Sony sensor.

The A7R retails for quite a bit LESS than the D800E, and as you said, is much lighter.

As long as you don't buy it expecting a sports or action camera, you will be VERY pleased with the results under almost ALL conditions and circumstances. ;)

Well I should let you know I followed some of your input, checking out equipment on DXOMark etc., I chose to move forward and purchase the Sony Alpha a7r camera along with the FE55 lens. Should arrive by the 13th of this month. Have not been this excited since I had purchased my Canon 7D. Again I thank you for all your help and to the others who contributed input as well. I was also interested in the 70 - 200 Fe lens for mucho $$$$'s but not available yet. This lens will get me a lot of practice for awhile. Again thanks and am hoping to post pictures on here shortly after I get this new camera. Hmmm a kid with a new toy, right?

Norm, I'm glad you got what you wanted.

I think you will be impressed with the camera once you know what you have on your hands... :D

Speaking of knowing your camera; let me make a recommendation. Check THIS out:

http://friedmanarchives.com/A7r/index.htm

Watch his video.

Gary Friedman is literally a Rocket Scientist who is also an award winning professional photographer, life-long Minolta/Sony fan, and one of the BEST authors of instruction manuals in the business.

His book are EXTREMELY well written and full of details about every function and feature of your camera. He literally covers EVERYTHING and does it VERY well in clear, easy to understand language.

But don't take MY word for it; read some of the testimonials at the bottom of the page.

I have several of his products, and let me tell you, they are WELL WORTH THE MONEY.

Checked it out. Looks like I might buy this book. Before I do though I want to go to my favorite Barnes & Noble book store to see what they have. I had purchased books from B & N for my 7D.

^^^^This book will be better than any others on the market.

I purchased two other books for my A77 prior to Friedman's book hitting the market. I read them both cover to cover.

Friedman's ok blew both out of the water!

AND you get two week satisfaction (or your money back) guarantee.

I have one due here Tuesday..body only. I bought a modern fotodiex adapter that lets it shoot my cannon lenses with autofocus as well. I don't plan to shoot action sports with it but it will be my full frame replacement for my excellent travel Canon eos M3 cropped sensor 24 mp camera with good lenses. The lenses migrate to the A7 as of Tuesday night and I will then only be full frame. Travel, Sony A7 with canon 17-85mm good lens and other Nikon D4 with selection of pro f 2.8 lenses...28-70 and 80-200mm

I have seen enough to know this little camera's sensor is very special.

I'll keep the friedman book in mind but the algorhythms of these cameras are all so similar nowadays and there are any number of youtube videos on it that I prefer to learn by experiementing rather than reading manuals and books. It's the way I learn better personally.

If you have never used a Sony A7XXX camera before then you will NOT get the best out of your purchase by watching youtube videos.

thanks for your opinion. considered and concluded that is not the only way to saddle the horse. I have bought "the book" for many cameras five or six cameras ago and found them to be reference works if stumped....

nice to know there is a valued reference book for the A7 if needed.

we'll saddle this horse without and learn as I go. for me that is more than half the fun with these optical computers.

thanks for your input.
