It looks a bit underexposed (dark), to me. Try ISO 200, and shutter speed around 1/500. Check your meter mode - probably want matrix.

To me it looks underexposed and the focus is soft. You're right the skin color could be adjusted some. These changes can be made in photoshop.

I have a D40, so it should be very close to what you see. I usually decide what aperture I want and set it. Then I adjust the shutter speed until the meter is where I want it - usually in the center - all the green bars are gone except the zero.

If I decide I want to give more preference to the shutter speed (show or stop motion), I'll set the speed first, then adjust the aperture.

Depending on the subject, I may overexpose (meter to the right of the zero) or underexpose (meter to the left) a little. If I'm going to bracket (the D40 doesn't do it automatically), I'll get the setting for centered meter, then drop down one or two stops (three to six 'clicks'), shoot, set up a couple of clicks, shoot, etc.

If I'm in a hurry or shooting something really fast, I'll go to aperture or shutter priority (A or S).

Matrix will evaluate (almost) the entire scene, whereas spot meters a much smaller area - the small circle in the viewfinder. Center-weighted is a compromise between the two - whole scene with more weight given to the middle. I usually stay in matrix unless the scene is tricky, like the moon or a waterfall in the woods.

edit:silly smilies keep coming up when combining quotes and parenthesis.

what does the histogram look like? the histogram is your friend, if it doesn't start at one end and go to the other youve not got a correct exposure. the skin tone is a tad too pale for me but can be fixed in pp.Why such a fast shutter speed? if you shot with a larger f stop number your dof would be better and baby's hat would be in focus.

Yeah, the histogram dies off well before the right/bright edge. It's underexposed.

Golly guys. You should know by now not to just edit and re-post someone's photo without asking first. Just because someone asks about and posts their photo does not mean it's okay to edit!!!!!

photophly, the picture in the original post did not have a "download" option. In order to edit the photo, how did you acquire it, a screenshot?
