My partner and I attend almost every Native American Powwow in the area. They are attended by people representing different tribes from all over the nation,
The couple image were two dancers waiting for their events. I liked the way they interacted together which caught my eye.
The male dancer is competing in the Men's Traditional Dance. He is only one of many in the field. One of my favorites to watch because the dance is so animated. The move portrayed is a pantomime of tracking.
The older woman is an Elder saying a prayer opening the ceremonies. She is Princess Chi-Chi of the Shinnecock tribe, her father was the Chief of the tribe in days past and she is very involved in keeping traditions and histories alive.

The Pow Wow at Riverside Park is something I look forward to each year. They celebrate their heritage and display their pride in service to the United States Military.

Yep. In light of several developments and discoveries in recent years, it's tough right at this point to define what is and isn't a Native American. I'll just put it like this - we're looking for what are presumed to be descendants of the Chukchi people who supposedly crossed over the Bering Strait allegedly becoming the first inhabitants of North America and who have up until just lately been considered to be the forefathers of the "Indian" people in North and South America. Examples would be Cherokee, Sioux, Navajo, Creek, Aztec, Inca, Anasazi, etc., et. al.[/quote]

The pictures were taken at the Shinnecock Annual PowWow on LI, held on the reservation usually on Labor Day weekend. It's probably the largest one held in New York and gets the biggest attendance. The Shinnecocks are part of the Mohawk tribe. There are several smaller ones held from Spring through Summer. There are several less known tribes associated with Long Island but assimilation has taken its toll. We've learned to appreciate the culture through our friend Chief Little Fox of the Paumanauke tribe.
