Looking to sell a lens here, need advice from others that have sold and bought here. What's the best method to conduct the transaction? Pay pal, COD etc..
Thanks!

PayPal has worked for me, but the seller has to pay a commission of maybe 3%.

I have had excellent service from UPS COD. You must be truthful in your ad and show pictures of the equipment. The folks that read these ads are the cream of the crop when it comes to photographic equipment.

This was my experience of selling on the Hog:

I realize not everyone can risk being that trusting. There was only $500 involved, so I took the chance and it worked out very well.

Provide a detailed listing of your item.
Show a few clear pictures.
Perhaps some pictures taken if it's a lens.
COD? Do they still have that?
Offer a fair price. Remember, most of us are tech savvy & aware of prices on eBay & Amazon.
Get a PayPal account. Best protection for you & the buyer.

Hope this answers your questions.

I recently sold a camera and inquired at the local UPS Store about sending it COD. They told me that they try to discourage people from using their COD service because first, the sender has to put up the full dollar amount. In this case, $500. Secondly, if for any reason the receiver did not pick up the package I would be out the $500. I told them never mind. Made no sense at all to me. Make any sense to you, or was the person I spoke to full of beans?

I've done the UPS COD thing a couple of times, I never had to put any money up. That's nuts. The driver collects the cashiers check or money order and it is mailed to you. If there is no check from the buyer, the package gets sent back. The UPS store you were dealing with simply didn't want to do the paper work.

You're probably right. What they were saying made no sense.

I will say that I wouldn't put anything on for more than $1,000 because even with COD, you could have a brick in the package and the buyer wouldn't know it until the UPS driver had gone with your money. It is possible to stop payment on a money order, but it cost a bundle. I am downsizing to smaller cameras and have a Canon 5D Mark III that I wouldn't sell on this site because it is too much. I have to sell it on Craigslist. The problem with Craigslist there aren't as many knowledgeable folks that read that.

You could find someone on the Hog in your general area willing to meet you with money order in hand. You can always post it with whatever stipulations you want as to how to finalize the deal.

I believe the seller needs to specify what forms of payment are acceptable, and that is what the driver will pick up.
If you specify cash(if you can even do that anymore), you are of course putting the driver in the awkward position of carrying it around. Not sure they do that anymore. ;-)

I doubt that would work with my PO. They don't even know about Return to Sender. I have to go to another PO to do that. :D

UPS won't accept cash. They will take a cashier's check, money order or personal check if the seller will accept a personal check. All the requirements are on the UPS website.

Yes, that is true. When I get ready I might post it on here and see what happens.
