Yup, lens dust. I hate when that happens. I would google how to safely remove lens dust. I have several different ways. The giotto rocket is one but you will find some ways online.

I did manage to get a decent shot just now so I'm happy. Can't tell if the cleaning did any good until tomorrow though.

The pup 7mo old pit/lab mix named Dakota ... he's my protector :)

The shot was with my 200-400mm lens with the 2X extender, f/11, ISO 800, 1/640

and the tripod of course that darned lens is pretty heavy

I take mine into my local camera shop, I'm lucky because I'm in there at least once a month or so, they will clean my camera while I window shop or play with the shop dog (no really they have a dog!).

If you go to your camera store see if they have a sensor brush. They are made for what you are doing. You spin it and it get static electricity in the hairs and when you brush your sensor it collects the dust. You spin it again to clean it. When take a picture of the blue sky again. If this doesn't do the trick, you have to do what they call a wet clean. My camera shop will do it for me, I guess I spend to much there because they do it for free lol. I do have a cleaning kit in my bag and have done it myself when I am camping. Over the last 3-4 years, only had to do it 3 times. But I do a lot of camping and walking, always changing lenses.

Canons also get oil on the sensors. You really need to learn to wet clean your camera sensor, its not hard and you won't harm it.

It is not hard to do but you do have to be careful. Light strokes with the brush or wet swabs. And not to wet if you are wet cleaning.

as others have already suggested it is dust. You can remove it from your photos after the fact with your software. Which a lot of folks do until they get tired of all that work , or the dust level increases :)

Happens sooner are later to all of us no matter how careful we are with our equipment.

Ok, my son has a d300, and it started looking this way. But it was before he had had it a year, Oil On The Sensor. :) Probably just smutz with the Canon.

LOL what is smutz .... ? It's a canon so it must have a lower level of dirt ? lol

The best moon shot I ever took ... so far and I noticed these spots ... which aren't on the photo of my dog taken just after... so I hit auto tone and omg what a mess
Does this mean my camera needs to go in for a good cleaning ? I just looked at the telephoto lens and it is dusty could it be just from that do you think ?

it is dust on the sensor. Clean the sensor if it truely bothers you or do it the old fashioned way, blow up the pic and spot it manually.

I started to just clone them out but once I tested the auto tune and saw how many there were I knew something was definitely off enough to be adressed.
