Need help with Photshop 9

Hi, I took this picture in Venice last fall and love how the light is shimmering like stars. I had photoshopped the sun spot and the crane out of the picture and was pleased with the results until I printed an 8x10. It was very grainy. Unfortunatey, I had to replace my hardrive so I don't have the final image, just the RAW and JPEG.
I am new to photography and editing but I am loving it and want to learn as much as possible. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a Canon EOS Rebel XT. This was shot TV 1/1000 f22 ISO 800, focal length 217. Size is 3456 x2304.

Did you crop the photo at all?

Higher ISO's like 800 can cause digital noise. And if you cropped it tighter than that can make the grain more visible. And if it was a dark photo, under exposed, and you lighten it a bunch that could cause noise to be more visible.

In photoshop there is a filter the reduces noise. It doesn't do much, but it may help. . I have a plug in I purchased called Imagnomic that really helps reduce grain but I use it all of the time for portrait photography.

Hi Mary,

The combination of a high shutter speed and a very small aperture (F22) is going to increase noise in a picture taken in fairly dim light. The star effect in the water is caused by the small aperture you were using. When I shoot with the Sun in a picture, I will sometimes use a smaller aperture (than usual)to give me that star effect. If you had used a slightly larger aperture (I.E. F16 or F14), you could have picked up more detail in your shadows and still had the star effect in the water.

Thank you for the feedback! I have had the camera for 4 years but have only recently decided to learn how to really use it. I might have to go back to venice and try again!! :)
