I took this pic back in July when we were up in the mountain riding. Give me some critique on it :)

Composition in general is not bad. I wish you had gotten closer especially to the action. this type of pic just begs for some type of central action figure like the cowboy at the rail. Don't get me wrong, panoramic shots like this are not bad ideas but they tend to throw so much into the shot that is becomes "interesting" but not personal. Also you might have walked up the hill in back a bit and shot from there. I find that shots from above subjects add a "pop" factor. A shot from the end at the point where the left horse's rear end is, shooting down the line of horse's ends with cow poke off to right would have been a possible shot as well.

I find it is always helpful to look at the area and imagine how many different ways I can shoot it, different locations, angles, elevations, aperture and speed settings. For this shot, you settings look OK. Am guessing you shot in auto mode and nothing wrong with that...

My favorite rule of thumb, when in doubt, crop...

What wmralls said - this came up about closeups of bees / butterflies - you have to see the background before the shot happens - afterwards it's hard to fix - a few steps either way makes a huge difference ! Or, going around to the other side, even !

I agree. A closeup of the cowboy with the horses would be a great composition.
