I am looking for recommendations for a camera repair service. The autofocus on my camera needs to be checked.

Thanks.

You might want to mention the brand and model.

Do you have more than one lens? Changing lenses can narrow down the problem to a body problem or a lens problem. You might also want to expand on the info. Specifically which Canon model and which Sigma lens. The more info the better. Also a better description of the problem. Why do you feel the AF needs to be checked?

Canon 60D, Canon 18-200, Sigma 70-200. Both lenses are rear focusing. Checked on a target. Same problem with viewfinder or live view and different focal lengths.

Sounds like a body problem if it's occurring with two different lenses. Contact Rick at http://www.discountcamerarepair.com/.

I left two phone messages for him and never heard back. I own a business and expect the kind of treatment from a vendor that I give my customers. This experience does not give me the proverbial warm and fuzzy feeling.

He's got a great reputation. Don't write him off yet. I did camera repair for over 20 years but have been out of it for about 8 years now. One problem you might run into is sending the Canon body to Canon with another brand of lens. Here's a thought. If you have a place nearby that sells compatible lenses (Best Buy) take the camera in to try a new lens. Shoot at different focal lengths and distances in the store then go home and upload the images. Simple quick test that will cost you nothing. Then go from there. I would suggest a real camera store but they, unfortunately, are few and far between these days.

Your camera should have a focus tuning feature that will let you tune the cameras AF system to match the lenses. Canon refuses to provide aftermarket lensmakers with their AF Algorithm and that makes the aftermarket have to reverse-engineer their "best guess" as to how to setup the lens' focus for each camera.
Canon has partnered with Tamron recently to provide Tamron with that AF algorithm in exchange for Tamrons releasing only Canon mount lenses whenever they release a new model. This was first done with the 70-200mm F2.8 VC lens, and most recently with the new 150-600mm zoom lens.

Thanks for the input. Canon has the AF adjustment on the 50D and 70D but not the 60D. What were they thinking!

I cannot believe that Tamron would do something like that. Talk about the free market.

I did not realize that. I have sold my last 60D so I didn't have one to check, but I thought it did have as new as it is. Sounds like a mistake to me, its such a useful feature to have.

How exactly does that feature work. The Canons I'm using are outdated. As far as the exclusive to lens manufacturers deal, that seems almost unethical. But business is business. We damn sure don't need any government regulation on cameras and lenses.

Never mind. I found part of the answer. http://www.mediacollege.com/video/camera/focus/back-focus.html . I used to do this in the old days adjusting zooms. We would adjust focus at the widest setting and at the longest zoom setting. Then go back and forth until we achieved the best results. Very time consuming and irritating with some lens since it involved dis-assembly and re-assembly at times.

I respect your opinion and will give him a third try but three strikes and he is out. I will email him this time.

I spent a few hours shooting various targets under various conditions. The scientist in me. I ultimately had to make my own target to get a definitive answer but am sure of the rear focusing.

I could send the body and lenses back to the manufacturers but that would involve a lot of extra time and expense.

Thanks for your input.

Don't recommend Strauss Photo Technical Service, Inc Washington DC Several years ago I sent them a Canon pro lens for repairs, they emailed me about the lens said they were waiting for parts from Canon, then they quit answering my emals. That was four years ago.
Some one on UHH suggested Rick's repair. I sent him a couple Canon camera's for repair and was happy with results. Will try to find his info or maybe someone else has it. Good luck Bee
