The everglades have very few iconic images since it is basically just a see of grass. This is the last photo I'm sharing of my recent excursion into the 'glades. It is a more than 100 year old bald cypress known to the locals as the Z or N tree. Its strange shape makes for compelling photographic drama. I have over 50 images of this tree taken at various times throughout the day in various types of light. However I think that this is the single most compelling image. I captured this at 9:00 p.m. or thereafter with the rising moon. above the tree. I would like to go back and shoot this again against a star filled sky.

Your thoughts on this one??

The best so far. I think your "painting" is much more specific to the tree. The black background with the moon in perfect exposure is very nice. The only distraction is that one weed cutting across the trunk and into the arm of the tree. Maybe if you go back do a little gardening and get rid of that weed and the bright one in the foreground.

You certainly are BIG on gardening! I'll check the grass out when I go back to do the stars.

Maybe we should make this a Group Hog Gathering project. Think the fun with all of us in the glades together!!!

I'll provide the mosquitoes!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

I agree, this is your best one yet. You've exposed for the moon perfectly, the tree is nicely lit and framed in black, it's just that pesky grass. It ruins the mystery of it. Weed wacker … I think that is your only solution. Hedge trimmers? Is it possible not to light the tree as much down near the ground? You are so close on this one. Love that moon.

I would for sure try to make it as I have never been to the Ever Glades. I wonder if there are others that would car pool. You can forget the mosquitos.

Seriously Treadwl? I would love to take a trip there. I would bring a weed wacker. That shot and that tree are worth the work. It could be such a haunting shot without the lit grass. Maybe I should bring the hedge trimmers instead, in case we get chased by a gator. Judy, let's go. :-)

I'm ready some time in the fall or next winter. I need to get SD over and paid for first and I don't want to do Fl in the summer. :-D

Well folks, that tree is not going anywhere. Fall is not a great time to be in the glades due to really aggressive bugs, but after Thanksgiving until when ever we start to warm up the bugs are at their least aggressive state. If you guys want to come, I'll be happy to act as guide. There are motels 12 minutes from the park, and a really GREAT fruit stand that makes unbelievable fruit shakes. We could make a grand time of it. Just let me know. Would love to see you explain the weed whacker to the park rangers. . .

The weed whacker might be a no go. I am not into doing a lot of jail time.
I am in favor of no bugs. We should plan for a year from now. Just about the time we can't stand one more day of winter.

Harry Potter's tree!

Perhaps a remote flash or two on just the tree or past the foreground grass.

Or clamp you camera down and do a time exposure, then "paint" the tree with a flash light ( Torch in the UK LOL ). Once you get that technique down, lie in wait for the moon again as I think that really kicks it over the top to a cool pic.

Bring some beer, not because of the photo, but to enjoy the night properly!

You have the spot, go back till you iron it all out!

I do have plans on going back.---Interesting ideas. Since the area is all much and brine and swamp--I'm not real keen on setting up remote flashes and leaving them standing in the marsh.----But I'll think about it.

Magnificent. You can easily edit out any brightly offending sticks and weeds with the healing brush.
