You done the right thing with walking away. I've been working around aircraft for over 25 years. I work mainly military aircraft, alot of our work is done in hangers at comerical airports. That is another reason for security. We have people at times taking pictures at the airport but they first go tru the FBO first with no problem but are restricted form our area. As many others have said ask for permission first it will go a long way.

I recently visited a small municipal (public) airport and was taking pictures of small planes parked on the ramp. Through a fence I may add. The airport manager approached me and asked me to stop shooting. I do know that you can enter the aircraft's tail number and Google will provide various registration/ownership information. It was no big deal and I did not want to start an argument so I stopped shooting. Was the guy out of bounds and I should have just ignored him?

In these days and times ity is best not to evoke the ire of airport management, anything remotely suspicious can be crimp in your day. A simple phone call end up "Spalinin to the MAN" what and why etc etc.

An ounce of didn't do it is worth a TON of didnt MEAN it.

That drives me nut s ! If you don't want to live by an airport ,WHY BUY A HOUSE by one and then try to close it down ! We are lucky ...75 years ago the people who owned the land our airport is on gave it to the state as long as it remained an airport...otherwise it goes back to the estate. They (the township) tryed to close it down 20 years ago and the state of Mi said forget it ! lol...So far so good !

Not totally related but funny. We were taking a tour of Windsor Castle and noticed huge Jumbo jets taking off from Heathrow and flying directly over the castle. One tourist, American I am afraid, asked "Why did they build the castle so close to the airport?" True story.

had a crazier deal goin on here about 4 years ago. guy that bought the airport was going to turn it to a develper was going to turn it into low income housing. then the developer wanted a feasability study so had to core drill see what was under the surface. lol... rock solid rock runway sittin flat on limestone well needless to say developer backed out. mean while whole community filed to city about low income housing would lower property value. city ruled this property was good for hay meadow, rock quarry or airport.

I think you had all the right necessary to photograph private airplanes. I am a licensed pilot and I own an aircraft. Personally. I would be honored to have folks want to photograph my plane. I don't know of any rule that would preclude you from photographing aircraft. Pilots and personnel around airports are asked to report any suspicious activity. I wouldn't consider this behavior suspicious.

Funny thing while researching this question I found out it's illegal to take photographs on military bases. I can't tell you how many times I've done that here.

I shot a few thousand on the Niagara Air Base this last summer at the air show there. I lugged 2 bodies, 6 lenses, and flash around in my pack. Shot picks of pretty much every plane static and flying over two days. None of the MP's ever mentioned anything about not shooting there--and I was just one of hundreds using DSLRs there.

key word airshow.. about any airport around here you come on aifield just start makin self at home without observing notice on sign at entrance all visitors are to contact fbo personal will be subject to personal trespassing an subject to arrest. you will have to sign a liability release. that persons attitude most likely dertermine how it gets handled. so if that person is one of those i am me an i can do anything any way i want you most likely get a big suprise what right they have on (PUBLIC) airports. like previously mentioned parts are public an parts are not. not fence to fence. jfk airport is a public airport. walk behind barriers see how public it is same on small airports.

Thanks for your concern, but I always ask before I shoot private or secure places, even did at the base.

Just to be clear though, I was merely pointing out that there are obviously exceptions to the statute cited in the post I responded to. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

You can't arrest someone for a civil trespass: you'll have to come up with some other excuse.

Hmmm.... I heard the same story about a Scottish airport and castle, Stirling I think, from a fellow whose daughter was a tour guide there.

I'm not calling you (or him, or his daughter) a liar, but did you actually hear this said? Or are you reporting it in good faith, as I do when I tell the Stirling story?

I was told the story at Mnajdra in Malta, where an American tourist actually did say to me, "Why don't they take better care of it? I mean, it's a complete ruin." He seemed unable to grasp that ruination was quite likely in a building at least 5000 years old. A few minutes later, sheltering from a brief shower, I told someone else this story, and he told me about his daughter and Stirling.

Cheers,

R.

CLARIFICATION:

When I said I wasn't calling Dblunt76 a liar, I meant it in the strictest sense. I wasn't. That's why I asked if he had heard it with his own ears, or was merely reporting it in good faith, as I report my story of Stirling Castle. It is, after all, rather a good story, and potentially the stuff of urban legend. I apologize unreservedly for any offence I may have given.

Cheers,

R.

They have never said anything to me here at the Air Force base either... and I've been pretty obvious about it. However I bet when the new Drones get here it will be a different story. I love the boneyard here though we even have Air Force One .... I'd love to know which presidents flew on it and photograph the inside... but LOL don't see me getting permission to do that.

Yes, I too have taken lots of photo's, actually slides, on military bases during shows. There is nothing classified on display there so they don't mind. But I can tell you something that happened to me while I was stationed in Germany, and this is not hearsay, it actually happened to me. My friend and I were on an american Air Base where we had just purchased a new lens for each of our camera's. We went out to the observation area near the runway and was taking a few slides of the aircraft that were coming and going. Then one came out of a hanger and started towards the area where we were. I pointed it out to my friend and told him that I had to have a picture of that one, Put the camera up to my eye and was getting it focused and ready to go, when the camera was gently pushed towards the ground, and a voice says, "You don't want to do that."Naturally the anger had already flared in me and I was just about to give someone a piece of my mind, when I looked to my left and saw the gold oak leafs of a major facing me with his hand still gently on my camera! I said well yes, I really do, Sir, but if you say that I don't, then I won't. He said you may watch, but no photo's. From my memory and the very few pictures that I have seen of a U-2 spyplane, that is what took off that day.
