Not true. Not true at all. That is an over-generalization.

I'm a pilot and spend a lot of time in the small rural airports here and in Florida. Since 9/11, everyone has been on guard. Considering that most small General Aviation planes are in the $100,000.00 neighborhood and up, and the airport charges good money to be able to park a plane there, owners expect security. Also, most "plane" people are very leery of the FAA....they're a sneaky outfit ! Also, many people are VERY anti-airplane....we've had people at my airport stir up trouble over the years complaining of noise. Never mind that they built their $500,000.00 homes next to the airport AFTER the airport had been there for years !! It's just a fact that everyone is on their guard these days !!

we have a small-panes airport nearby, with a restaurant at which we sometimes eat and watch the planes land and take off. I always take photos of the planes and so do others. No one has ever been concerned.
On the open-air observation deck of the LAX restaurant, close to the tower, I encountered a group of people with notebooks, entering the tail numbers of jets. Turns out their is a world-wide club that does that and it is legit. This group was from Britian but there are always people up there engaged in that activity.

Sam - I agree with you giving the best response and I also agree with janik since you didn't ask permission in the first place. Imagine someone taking pictures of your residence without you knowing why or giving your ok.

Access depends on the type of airport. Ours which has four airlines serving it and restricts all access to airline passengers and those employees of the local fixed base operators (FBO) and pilots who have been authorized access. Otherwise you take pictures through the fence.

I'm based at a very small, un-fenced rural airport. Since 9/11, the FAA as well as all pilot organizations have instituted "Airport Watch". If we see someone we don't know, we approach them and ask what they're doing. If they're just taking pics, that's fine. The thing to do is to let someone know. We've had camera clubs walk all over the airport snapping pics without telling someone ! Last year I had a girl standing in the middle of the runway trying to get pics.....seriously ??? Know how hard it is to avoid hitting someone or something when you're landing ?? Airport owners and managers, especially those at airports with no fences, pay HUGE liability premiums !! And the courts always side with the individual that got injured ! When the camera clubs ask, we always encourage them ! However, we have to watch them to make sure they stay out of a potentially dangerous situation ! Taking shots at airports is fine, and encouraged, as a lot of us pilots have a camera in our hands....but respect the people who use the airport and ask first !

Don't foreget terrorists use common ordinary activities to conceal there true intentions. With all the electronics and wireless remotes for cameras today, it may not be long before these are used as bombs similar to cell phones (they take pictues).

I recently visited a small municipal (public) airport and was taking pictures of small planes parked on the ramp. Through a fence I may add. The airport manager approached me and asked me to stop shooting. I do know that you can enter the aircraft's tail number and Google will provide various registration/ownership information. It was no big deal and I did not want to start an argument so I stopped shooting. Was the guy out of bounds and I should have just ignored him?

I have to agree with most everyone else. If you're on public property you may photograph everything within sight.

I don't know if everyone would be that helpful or not, but the local folk know that I have a great interest in the older prop driven aircraft, and that if I drive by and there is one parked that I will come in and ask if I can get a few pictures of it. I have never been turned down, and they have been most helpful. And yes, I agree that I would not find it to my liking if I went out and found someone taking pictures of my property without asking first.

I agree with you Willy...although I don't think the OP was talking about legalities. We just don't like the FAA, and seeing as how they always carry cameras....for evidence, people may think anyone with a camera is from the FAA...or tax collector !! But snap away....it's flattering to me when someone wants to snap me or stuff around me !
