I recommend Linhof Technica 4x5. It will teach you to slow down and make every shot count. It will also produce beautiful photographs!

DT, I read one time that those cameras were for OLD people that move slow, is that true?

Yes, of course that is true! Of course, the old person needs to be free of arthritis, too.

Rac, last weekend I was in Hussong's Cantina. There is a fireplace mantle, with some old relics on it. On it was an old, old Polaroid camera with an old Sunpak flash. They were both covered in decals and stickers and stuff was held together with tape. I thought it was sooo cool that I actually took a pic of the old relic.
There was an old man in a back room talking to some musicians.
The musicians came out to play, and the old man came over, picked up the old camera and started taking pictures and selling them to the bar goers. I was blown away. I'm sure he makes his living with that old camera! He is a pro. I wonder where he was getting his film!? :)

Capn, if you don't think it's the camera, try taking a photo with out one.
It won't matter HOW many lessons you take.
It's the camera. ;-)

Capn, you are right. But, take that camera from the monkey, and hand him a banana. Now, how many pics do you think he'll get?
Capn, I keep telling ya, it's the camera, not the monkey.

Well you should get a lot of great shots of a monkey eating a banana.

Please post some.

People who buy a dslr tend to stick and defend the quality of the first brand they buy because of their lens collections. A good lens is expense. I think the brands you name all make very good cameras now days. I've owned Nikon,Sony,Pentax,Canon and Olympus. They all took nice pictures if you learned the camera.

Well if you don't want a Linhof, a Hasselblad will also make nice pictures.

I don't think that at this time none of the major camera makes are ''better'' than the other...its like buying a new car...all the major car brands are good and dependable...its just little things that give one preferance over one...so go somewhere where you can touch and feel...read the reviews..then bite the bullet

Not to pick nits...

The Sony RX-100 is a really a Point & Shoot. Granted a VERY, VERY good P&S but a P&S just the same.

Also, as far as mirrorless is concerned, the Sony NEX line is excellent. I have a NEX-7 along with a number of lenses & it takes EXCELLENT photographs (especially with the Zeiss 24mm f1.8).

The Sony RX-100 is not a point & shoot. It can be used like a point & shoot, but unlike a point & shoot it has a 1in 20 megapixal sensor and can shoot raw and gives the photographer full control over focus and exposure just like a DSLR.

^ This. Cameras and lenses are tools. Find the ones that fit your own hands and work styles, and you'll be good.
