Here's my take on the photo. If you increase the contrast, saturation and structure you'll improve the overall look. Whiten just the sides of the boats. You then need to remove the slight vignette in the top corners. Finally straighten the horizon and sharpen the photo. The result is:

Original - Unedited
Original - Unedited...

I love the shot as it is. I can feel the warmth of the evening sun and you've captured the mood of the moment. Great job

Was this the lighting you saw or was your white light balance imperfectly set? If you want to match your original lighting, PS is the way to go but do it through Camera Raw prior to entering PS. If you want to keep the misty feeling, don't sharpen the final image prior to exiting PS.

I would crop the sky slightly for improvement of the composition. Nice overall shot...

WOW!! Love it! It sure knocked my socks off when I opened it.
I don't think it needs anything, although I do like Bob's edit, too.
Either way, it's gorgeous.

Great job!

Hey John,
Nice composition. My Photoshop CS5 edits include: 1. new blank layer, blending mode changed to Multiply. added a linear gradient from both top and bottom to darken the top of the blank sky and its reflection in the foreground. 2. levels adjustment to compress tonal values. 3. curves adjustment to selectively increase contrast. 4. sharpening with a high pass filter set to 1.5 radius.

In My Humble Opinion the darkened sky and foreground help draw the eye to the subject - the sailboats - and the attendant saturation make the overall photo much more dramatic.

Let me know what you think.
