Talk Me Into It!

I am a hobbyist who shoots grand kids, flowers and landscape. I have a Canon 60D and a faithful 5D Classic. I use them both and readily see the differences as well as the similarities. All but one of my lenses will fit the 5D. My question revolves around the technology, or rather, lack of technology, of the 5D. The camera is several years old and is getting kind of long in the tooth. I recently had it serviced by Canon which included reattaching the problematic shutter. The camera has been certified as being up to factory specs. A really great camera. It still does very well for its design, but my mouth is watering to upgrade to a 6D. I know the 6D has quite a bit of technological advantages, including video, that leave my old 5D in the starting blocks. The biggest disadvantage, at least as I see it, however, is the low ISO range of the 5D as compared to the 6D, which, as I understand, does very well in low light.

I would appreciated anyone who has used both the 5DClassic and 6D to give me some insights, recommendations and ownership advice and comparisons. Many thanks in advance.
Dan

I don't currently have a 5D, but I have had 2 in the past. The 6D is light years ahead of it. The 6D's sensor even outperforms the 5D Mk3. Its truly the best buy out there in a Canon body.

I can only help you partially. I just sold a 5D "Classic" which had been carrying as a backup body to my 5D Mark ii. I replaced it with a 7D, giving me both a FF and "crop" body to work with. Like yourself, I was concerned that despite being a trusted workhorse, the technology was getting a bit dated. I was also concerned that it's resale value was going to continue to drop to the point where I could no longer get much for it. By selling now, it made a significant dent in the purchase of a used, Ex+ 7D from KEH.

Selling off the older 5D at this point is not bad logic. You can still get value for it. The market (at least on eBay) is still active for that model, and most replacements (6D or possibly the 5D Mark ii) will have tech advances worth the move up. Both 6d and newer 5d models will be an improvement in low light, which you indicate is a concern.

I really don't see the need to talk you into it. Sounds to me you're just itching to pull the trigger. But if it helps, you have my permission! :D

My nephew teaches photography. He has a 6d and loves it. He also has a 85mm f1.2 prime lens. We were in a very dimly lit restaurant. No flash was used. The photos were unbelievable. Had set ISO at 1600 and no sign of grain and talk about tack sharp.

Geez MT and I was saving for the 5d3, now I learn something new 6D. I have looked into it at the cannon site and they have a refurb for 1500plus some change. Have some homework to do now. Thanks!

Dan,

Here is a comparison of the cameras. I couldn't find a 5DClassic listed so used the 5D mk II for this.

http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=canon_eos5dmkii&products=canon_eos60d&products=canon_eos6d&sortDir=ascending

I own the 6D and really like it. The older 5D's used the Digic 4 processor and the 6D uses a Digic 5+ processor. From what I can see (I own a 7D which uses a Digic 4) there is a big difference in the two of them. The 6D has received many good to great reviews. For the money I really don't think you can go wrong!

If you are trying to upgrade and keep the expense down I would go for it. The next step in a FF would be the 5D mk III at quite a bit more expense, $1500.00 dollars. For the difference you could buy a second 6D and still get change!

You don't say which lenses you own but this package is an excellent deal, well worth looking at. The 24-105mm has also gotten very good reviews. I bought it figuring if I didn't like it I could sell it at a profit. Wrong, it has become my favorite walk around lens.

I looked on the Canon EOS refurbish site and they are selling the 6D for $1519.20 plus tax. Using an older and broken Canon film camera as a trade on the Canon Loyalty Program, I can the get 6D for 20% off that price which, according to the nice Canon lady, brings the price to $1,216.00 plus tax. That's with a one year Canon warranty. Sweet deal, huh!

Based on that, I have placed my 5D up for sale on eBay. BTW,I already have the 24-105, the 17-40 and 100 f2.8 macro, so I don't need to look for a bundle.

Thanks to all for the input and knowledge
