Last night my friends' apartment was broken into. The place was systematically ransacked.

Among items taken were Sharon's laptop, jewellery and an amount of cash, a flat screen TV and DVD player.

John's coin collection and two small paintings were taken and although his comprehensive Canon camera gear had been shaken out of the bag, to his relief nothing at all was missing.

Jim though, was devastated that his aging and battered Nikon D40 with kit lens was gone along with the dog eared instruction booklet.

Police said it was clearly the work of professionals.

Actually if you think about it, a person who breaks into people's homes in order to grab an armful of stuff to get a few dollars out of it instead of putting in a day's work every day for steady money isn't really too bright, so it says something about his inability to make smart choices. Just sayin' :)

Is there something I'm missing about this?

How am I supposed to react?

I live in an area where mostly people don't steal from each other...a pretty small town.

I guess I'm sort of stumped on why you posted this.

Because he DID.

Did not think anyone including Canon made replacement equipment for Nikon cameras and lenses. Maybe someday they will catch up to what Nikon makes today.

or they realized that a canon owners would have registered the camera and equipment's serial numbers with the manufacturers as well as already uploaded the camera information to sites like http://www.stolencamerafinder.com/ and trying to resell this equipment would only have lead to their speedy arrest.

Canon people tend to be on the ball and know the value of their equipment, thus they take steps to foil would be thieves before they make a play for their belongings. Nikon owners tend to wait for thieves so they can use the insurance money to purchase replacement CANON equipment. :)

I cannot relate how much I hate a thief! I dearly loved my D40 and still have it as a backup. The good news, if there are plans to replace it, is that there were a great number of them sold and your camera should be cheap to replace.

The reason is obvious. The thief had some circa 1960 Nikon lenses (the non AI ones) that won't work on either any Cannon or many of the newer Nikons, but will work on the D40!

I don't mean to try to be serious amid all the levity  , but seriously folks, when many years ago my beloved Nikons were stolen from my studio, the thieves walked right past three Hasselblads. The police surmised that the idiots simply didn't know what they were (thank goodness).

As it happened I replaced my Nikons with a matched pair of Canon T-90's. :D But NOT because I thought they were thief-proof!
(Nikon had by then priced itself out of my self-insured market.)

His point is that the thieves preferred Nikon over Canon.

The police should be looking for a Nikon fanboy. LOL.

Stupid thieves. They took the wrong camera!
