I was using the nikon F1-film body and now currently a borrowed nikon d70 (thats about 6 years old). I have been using it to shoot and maybe because I don't know how to use it correctly, I cant get what I like or what I am used to getting when shooting on my film camera.

This is my FIRST POST... and in response to Mr. 1eyedJack, the guy with the "gorilla photo" I'd like to respond. First of all.... please be nice ,.. there's no need to make judgment, that I should know something or "not" know something.
I've taken some pretty awesome photographs but I don't claim to be a super star. I am self taught and learning. I know very little,.. and am now taking my photography seriously. I have been to school for many things, but not photography,... and the one thing I know when I do "teach" is no question is a silly question.

If I were a NO-IT ALL,.. I wouldn't be here in this forum. I think that's what this forum is all about, " TO LEARN AND GROW".
I am not embarrassed that I know very little, I actually am happy of what I have learned and can now invest in taking my photography knowledge to the next level.

So you're basically starting from scratch again ! As long as you have a camera for now, figure out what you need, try to get to a camera store....brick and mortar....and talk to them about what you will be doing and what your needs are. Don't know where you are but most major cities have major camera stores. You can even rent equipment to try before you buy !

Yes,.. NY Web 2001.
And by the way ,.. thank you for being so gracious in commenting.
I have been pleased with what I have learned by trial and error,.. but want to take a class and learn more about the how to "talk to my camera", to get what I want.

Since I'm going to invest in a digital camera now,... thought the question was worth asking.
Thanks again and appreciate.

:-D

Sorry about that. I though you were a long time photographer
from the great photos on your web site.If you are upgrading
from film to digital look at the "full frame" models of
any maker brand, after that, what ever feels good in the
hands is the one to evaluate.

Take a look through kenrockwell.com, who has helpful information for making these kinds of purchase decision, as well as advice for making better pictures. You are not likely to go wrong with either Nikon or Canon (and in fact, the camera you have is likely to be able to take excellent photos). The differences in quality are negligible. Most important are your shooting practices, and it sounds like you have some experience built up already.

Since you have some lenses, you might want to think Nikon first, so you don't have to start from scratch. If you are dead set on upgrading, and want something closer to what the pros use, a Nikon D7000 is as close as you can get, until you move to full frame, which will also cost you considerably more. The D7000 has all the bells and whistles you could ever need, an excellent sensor, very good autofocus and metering. It is also currently difficult to get because of the production issues in Japan and elsewhere. Read read read for awhile, make sure your needs are very clear in your mind, and the right camera will emerge from all of that.

Good luck!

Honestly, I envy you because you have found your direction so quickly. Very few people are that lucky in any field. More power to you. BTW, I would buy more lottery tickets if I were you.

I think you'll get lots of people for Nikon and lots for Canon Maria. I'd heard that the Nikon colours were better from one person whilst another said canon. Actually both brands are so good it really comes down to personal preference and the deal you can get.

Hi fellow photographers.
I've been using Nikon film cameras and am LATE switching over to the digital world. I shoot portraits,... cd covers, book covers, and shoot for the modeling Agencies in LA , Miami and New York. My favorite photographers use Canon.
Should I switch over to Canon? One photographer said- If you shoot people- do Canon because skin tones and color saturation is better, and if you shoot sport stuff - use Nikon. Whats your opinion?
Greatly appreciated! Maria

Aloha, I had traded in my old film cameras body (kept all my Nikon lens) and got myself a used Nikon D200 about 3 years ago. I learn so much about my camera since. This is a much more complex and capable camera than my old film camera. You can tweak it and really mess with the setting. You need to spend time learning the in and out of what you are using. Tweak your camera to it's best setting that fit your need. Nikon & Cannon are both solid performer. Cannon is a must for sports photography. But Nikon lens is beautiful for portraiture. Find out what important to you. The next camera I want is the top of the line Nikon D3s. Love to have a camera that can function at very high ISO and produce very low noise. Only if I bank agrees with me on this. Good luck!

I was under the impression that this site is here to ask questions and gain knowledge. Am I incorrect?

I think this is question to which there is no right answer. Both make great products. To suggest that one is for sports and one for portraits makes no sense at all. A few years ago NFL sidelines were full of white lenses (Canon) - but now there are as many-or more-black lenses (Nikon). The D3/D3s/D3x has taken tons business from Canon. But that is now. That could change easily. And most likely will.

The slightly warmer look of Canon lenses is a fact. Some Canon shooters like it, some call it "...that yucky Canon yellow." It is a taste thing.
You will find successful professionals in both camps. I shoot with a Nikon D3 and D7000 and do mostly portrait work and some sports. The D3 excels at both.
Since you have the 24-70 2.8 ( a fantastic lens BTW) and the 80-200, you won't go wrong with any Nikon product.
I will say, if you ever intend to use a flash system, the Nikon system is far and away the best in the industry. The Canon system is not even close - nobody's is. That is not just my opinion - but the opinion of Canon Pros.
