I love the look of a gimbal, but why do you prefer this over say a ball head or other tripod adjustment?

Helps keep the Camera Level when shooting Birds In Flight. and the balance of a big lens. I Use a Ball head for everything else

Got my Lensmaster a few months ago based upon recommendations from other "hoggers". It never comes off my tripod now. I love this thing. Excellent quality too.

I have never used a gimbal - correct me if I am wrong - but at the instant you press the shutter release - is the gimbal locked or in free movement state ?

You can lock it for something that is relatively still or let if float free if you are tracking something moving like a bird in flight or sporting events. At least that is what I do.

I bought mine also on the strength of the fact that the chap is a really nice man to talk with and the after sales is 100%

As far as tripod heads are concerned, I have tried several and prefer the gimbal.

One reason is that there is one lock to control the horizontal motion and another lock for the vertical motion.

That allows quick changes and saves time.

It also makes life easy when doing landscape/panoramas as well as panning.

Other heads are great too but the several buttons to twist and turn can be counter intuitive to use, especially in the dark or when the head is oriented in some weird angle.

As I was not inclined to spend several $100 on a head, I decided to fabricate my own.

A few feet of 1 inch square stock, a bit of welding and polishing, paint and VOILA !

I have now used it for several months and it works very well for me.

I ordered the RH-2 on June 18th, now I'm waiting (impatiently-like kids waiting for Christmas Morning) for its arrival. Then I have to decide what lens I need :)
