Downeast Maine and Campobello

Enjoyed the nice weather yesterday and drove around to my favorite local places. West Quoddy Head State Park and Lighthouse - the eastern-most spot in the US. Then over the bridge to Campobello Island, New Brunswick. There is a great peat bog there - and due to the acid soil plants that can catch their own nitrogen in the form of insects - like the pitcher plants and sundew - have an advantage. Then to the far end of Campobello to the West Quoddy Head light station - always spectacular. And found a young harbor seal below the cliffs enjoying the afternoon sun as well.

Thanks. Wondering about becoming a "snowbird" when I retire - head south in November. The best of both worlds... I don't mind the wintahs here, but the rainy springtime can get pretty long and tedious.

I like the coast of Maine.
Although I was raised in Ct., I spent much more time exploring the coast of California.
I do admit the east coast has so much to see once you get above the Gloucester area. Points south are too crowded for me.
Your pictures are quite spectacular.
I guess in picture #1-- that is a plastic sheet draped on the side of the house?

I think they are doing a little painting on the keeper's house. When I first practiced medicine here 26 years ago one of my patients was serving his Coast Guard duty as the lighthouse keeper - I think he was the last on the coast of Maine, all of them now being fully automated. The keeper's house is now an information center. Once a year they open the lighthouse up to visitors (these shots done with a little pocket camera, so not really great, just interesting):

Nice shots of the stairway and light.
American craftsmanship at its best.

I remember an old cartoon of a lighthouse keeper sitting in a desk chair on castors. The chair was attached to the revolving light by a pole so the old man could keep pace with the light beam and read his book.

Beautiful shots all. Love the harbor seal. The interior of the lighthouse looks great!

Your resting seal should get some national exposure. This is a great capture!

That's pretty funny! These lighthouses were built with pretty good craftsmanship - and it's neat to think that the famous Portland Head Light was commissioned by President Washington. They have some history!

Thanks. I love his expression - you just know the feeling - a cool day with the bright warm sun beaming down on you - you just want to lay back, close your eyes, and smile.....
