I'm kind of in a quandary. Just gave my 18-55 non vr lens to my niece to use on her D60. She will be doing peace corp type work in Nicaragua with Orphan children. She did not have a lens with a motor in it for her d60.. The lens I gave her was really sharp. I have gotten some amazing pictures with it over the years. My question is for people who have used both the vr and non-vr version of this lens. If the VR is as sharp as the non-vr I will buy it tomorrow. I don't need VR on an 18-55 lens but will buy the upgraded vr if it is equal or better than the 18-55 non-vr. Thanks in advance for your answers.

My two cents is I would buy the lens you know and liked a lot. As you said, you don't need VR on an 18-55 lens. You probably would never even turn the VR on... ;)

They are pretty much equals when it comes to image quality. But this brings up the question of a possible lens upgrade opportunity also. Have a look at the 18-105VR, its as sharp and the extra range is very handy to have, but the price is about double the 18-55VR. There are others that would be good to look at. Just ask yourself if there is anything the 18-55 didn't give you that you might like to have?

Mt Shooter, the lens I gave my niece was really really sharp. I bought the 18-55 vr from National Camera today, took a few pictures with it and brought it back. Bought one of their non-vr 18-55 used kits instead. Brought it home, took some test pictures with it and I am back in the ball game. Rockwell and others are right. The non=vr is much sharper. At least that's my experience with the len's. I'm going full frame in the next year. Probably a D 600. In the meantime I wanted my 18-55 Back.

Nope, I took test shots with the vr off and on. Not nearly as sharp as the shots taken from the non-vr lens.
