That's quite similar to the crowing rooster taking credit for the sun coming up in the morning.

And the deficit would have been considerably smaller if Republicans hadn't blocked the passage of legislation and allowed Congress to accomplish a lot more during the past year.

You mean blocking bills that would have increased spending? (that would be all of them) Plus there is a big difference between the US deficit & the US debt...That reduction was due to sequestration...

Richard, one has to put that into perspective, as the Obama deficits are not only historic, they are almost unimaginable. Consider just what a trillion dollars is.... So, his deficits have run wild and he has finally gotten them back to just over 2X the deficit rates of GW and people are trying to sing his praise? Has the world turned itself upside down? Is a $900 billion deficit something to celebrate? Now the president comes asking for a second stimulus.... He is not concerned about deficits and has no intention of reducing them in the long term, if you study CBO projections, they projected a short term drop, which we are in right now, followed by sky rocketing deficits that will be unsustainable.

Why do you guys support this president, looked at objectively he is a failure, one of the worst economic managers that this country has ever had.

This country was about 16 trillion in debt. You are saying our national dept is now about 8 trillion. You had better wake up and understand whast is happening in this country.

That's an interesting assertion. Which legislation was blocked and which would have allowed Congress to accomplish more or reduce the deficit?

We could start with the jobs bill, which would have generated a great deal of employment and tax revenue, to start. You kow very well that this Congress has been historic in its lack of passing bills.

No, I did not say what you assert. I was referring to the ANNUAL deficit. Read the article. And as I am sure all you Republicans who damn Obama if he acts and damn him in the same situation if he didn't, there is nothing that he could do or not do, regardless of any circumstances, that you would not find as an excuse to pile blame on him.

[Just for the record, I am critical of a number of things he is done or not done, but I would like to keep this thread on topic.]

And you know very well that that jobs bill required a substantial outlay of funds from taxpayers...It's no wonder it didn't pass...They did that before & it didn't work then either...

So.. what is the jobs bill exactly and why is there republican opposition to it? "Jobs bill" sounds nice but what actually does it provide for? How much spending is authorized by the jobs bill and what exactly is it intended to accomplish. It is my feeling that the president and the democratic senate are hiding behind a great sounding moniker of a "jobs bill" when they have proposed nothing that will efficiently and effectively address the unemployment problem. That has been the way of this Administration and when congress did give him his way early on he did not follow through as promised. If you want to have the discussion Richard you will have to dig a little deeper to present a more reasoned argument.

I made an error. I thought you, of all people, would know what the jobs bill was. This was the bill several years ago that would have put thousands of people to work, repairing bridges, roads, etc. I am sure that with your sharp memory you remember that.. Now, the standard Republican excuse for its not being passed is usually something like, "Oh, it was filled with pork and that's why it wasn't passed." It probably did have pork projects in it (what bill doesn't), but it would have put thousands of Americans back to work, generating tax revenue, and helping the economy. Now, the real reason it was not passed -- and you can deny this forever, but I will not believe the denials -- is that Republicans had the stated goal of making Obama fail. In refusing to allow this bill to pass, the Republicans were only thinking about their political future, and not about the welfare of the nation. That, to me, comes very close to treason.

[If you need source citation for the statement that Republicans are on the record as having the chief goal that of making Obama fail, let me know, because I can give it. But to you I don't think this is necessary because you are well-read, intelligent and aware.]
