Flash Power Consumption

This is a question for the techie's. When we turn our camera's flash on power is taken from the battery to charge the flash. Once the flash is charged, does the flash continue to draw power to maintain it's charge, or does the flash stay charged without additional battery power?

If we do not use the flash right away, and the delay may last a minute or more, is it best to leave it on and charged, or to turn it off and then on again when needed?

The power consumed while on not charging the flash capacitor is negligible.

Turning things on and off is when they break.
(There's a lightbulb in a fire station that's been on continuously for over 100 years. http://www.centennialbulb.org/ BE CAREFUL, my anti-virus detected a threat when I went there)

And the startup time can be substantial. Several seconds.

Unless it's going to be 1/2 hour or so, I leave my Nikon flash ON and ready to go at a moment's notice.

Also, most all modern flashes have an auto-turnoff after a defined time limit. When you press shutter button 1/2, flash is turned on (with full charge). I have inadvertently left my 580 on for days (auto shut-off) with negligible battery power loss.

Auto shut-off?
Or auto standby?

Canon "Auto Power Off" can be ENABLED or DISABLED in custom functions ...
