This tractor ran on logs, and was used to pull tree trunks in logging operations.

I don't notice much difference between the two. In fact the sky is bluer in the original.

Is this HDR of one image? I don't think it improved the image. It has become less saturated. Nice shot of it though.

I agree that the original is more striking, or bold in color. I did the less saturated to bring out more details in the shadows, and I just couldn't have it both ways with out doing a lot of work with layers in PS. Photomatix adjustments just wouldn't accomplish bringing out the details, and retaining the color. The comments are of no surprise. Thanks for the CC's.
If you look at the enlarged view, the shadow area's are more revealing.
If there is a photomatix method of bringing out the detail in the shadows, and still retaining the depth of color, I'm not aware of it.
Perhaps because of the depth of colors in the original this would not have been a good photo to send to photomatix in the first place.

In the original, I think that just decreasing the black in 'Levels' would bring out the details in them. There isn't much to bring out anyway. I would only want to see a bit more on the dark areas of the little orange engine. The details in the funnel thingy in the background only added confusion to the front of the engine.
You are right that the default enhancer reduces the saturation (and contrast). That is why the processed HDR image needs to be further edited and enhanced.

I actually like the original better. If your using CS5 or 6 go to shadows and highlights and touch it up and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised . Nice shots and history.

As long as I had to do something about the distractions, I hope this is more of an eye pleaser.

I like the subject, That is way cool how the wheels are rounded to run on log tracks, I have never seen anything like that.

I would like to know more about the use, and history of this piece of equipment. Makes me wonder how they transported it to where they used it.

I really like the isolation shot. What "I" think is the issue with the non isolation shot was that with the strong lighting, there really wasn't much Dynamic range to pull out. looking at the shadows it appears that it was close to midday.
