This old timer is being restored. The area was fairly dark, so I untilized off camera flash in a different position for each of three shots +2/-2. Processed in Photomatix, and touch up in Photoshop.

From the position of the drive cylinders, I'd say no, it's a normal side rod locomotive.

It is known as the Hammond Lumber Co. #17 Alco 2-8-2.

It's wasn't a steam trip though, it was behind the NP F-7 diesel, we rode the cab from Freight House Square to where the tracks cross Meridian south of Puyallup. The train made a short stop so everyone could to go into the little store for snacks & drinks, and then my friend and I rode the rear platform of the observation car the rest of the way to Mineral.
Is was a fun trip, RR folks only, except for a few of us guests. I wish I knew where my photos were from that.

Yeah, this was an equipment move only. I think it was when they first got the F-7 and it had been painted at CEECO in Fife, and the 3 cars had likely had some work done as well. There were probably only 6 to 8 people total on the run, locomotive crew included.
Back in the same era, when the Chehalis Western was still hauling logs from Western Jct. to Tacoma, I got a cab ride from Western Jct to The Tacoma Belt Line (in those days) yard, dropped the loads, picked up a string of empties, and then back to Western Jct. It was a long day, but another fun trip. I think I had to be down at WJ at something like 4:30 AM and I lived in Redmond at the time.
