My Autofocus on my Nikon 70-200 f2.8 stopped functioning while shooting about a month ago, the night before a two week trip across the US. As soon as I returned, I took it back to the camera shop where it was purchased in March of this year. They tested on their d7000, same result, no auto focus, VR was fine. They sent it off to Nikon and it came back yesterday. I put it on my D7000 and it functioned for about 3 shots and stopped working again. All of my other lenses function just fine and I'm convinced that there is a lens problem beyond Nikon's first shot at the fix-
Their report: ADJ AF Operation, ADJ resolution test, CKD to good working order, General check and clean.
Taking it back to the shop again tomorrow- frustrating as I'm heading up to the Sierra's next week for a camping trip, without my favorite lens.
Any thoughts on what the problem might be?
As a Nikon shooter who is thinking of upgrading camera and lens, this story is disheartening. From reading posts on the Hog, it seems there are quality issues with some of Nikon's top tier cameras and lenses. I realize they service everything they sell but your expensive equipment failing during or right before a trip is horrible.
Why doesn't Nikon jut replace the lens with a new one. All four of my Nikon lenses came with a 5 year warranty!

No Idea; maybe a dirty contact! I would try to get a loner or maybe rent. Good luck and Happy shooting.

A few years ago, I had the same problem with a Nikkor DX 18-200. The auto focus stopped working after about 2 months right in the middle of a vacation . The manual focus worked just fine, so that is how I finished the trip. Even though I wanted a new lens, I sent it in to Nikon. Numerous phone calls later . . . . Tried to be nice, tried to play guilt, played the senior citizen card. They kept saying I deserved a new lens but they also kept putting me off. After about 6 weeks my original lens was returned in perfect working order. In fairness to Nikon, since then, I've taken about 15,000 images ..... it is still working fine. :D I'll be very surprised if you get a new lens. They keep putting you off until they figure out how to repair the original one.

Flipper: Although your post was 8 years ago, I have to thank you. I have a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 GII ED lens that I've had for a number of years. I recently went to use my lens, and the autofocus wouldn't work. I could focus manually, but no matter what settings I used, I couldn't get the autofocus to work. I tried cleaning the contacts and even tried using it on both my Nikon cameras, but no luck. I tried your method of moving the focus ring back and forth really quick 15 or so times, and voila, the autofocus worked! Damn! Saved me $2300 for a new one! THANK YOU!

According to their report they didn't really find the problem. I think the lens worked OK when it was in their hand.
For the record, I've had the same problem with a 4-month old Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. It will not autofocus on my D850 or my D500. Pretty frustrating since Nikon's repair service is currently closed and I can't send it in to get it repaired.

I've been experiencing the same issues with mine... had to slap it a few times. I was gonna send it into Nikon for an estimate, but will try the focus ring trick. The Nikon Service Repair Center is now open. Let me know what it costs if you send it in!!!

My AFS Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 was only about 3 months old when the AF stopped working. Sent it in to Nikon's Repair Center the day they opened back up and now, three weeks later, I see they have repaired it under warranty and it's being returned -- haven't received it yet.
I needed the lens for a project so while Nikon's Repair Center was closed indefinitely I bought another copy of the same Nikon 70-200 (works fine so far), and now I have the original 70-200 I need to sell. Tried to get Nikon to buy the original one back but they blew me off. We'll see how the repaired lens works but I have to say that I have been underwhelmed by Nikon's Customer Service here.
Which one did you send it to? East or West Coast? My lens is out of warranty, and has been at their West Coast repair center about 5 years ago... I love the lens but not sure what's happening with it...

East Coast/Melville. It was a warranty repair so there was no charge. Took about 3 weeks. I should receive it tomorrow, so I’ll find out then if they truly fixed the problem.
