Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter, and Speedlites

I purchased Canon's ST-E3-RT Transmitter, and the 600EX-RT. Both work great, and I'm very happy with them. Later I wanted a couple more Lites, and confirmed the 430EX II's can trigger wirelessly too. However, I can't figure out how to get the transmitter to trigger them. I suppose I could optically slave the 430's off of the 600 (triggered from the transmitter) when the conditions are right, but I wanted all three lites to trigger wirelessly from the ST-E3-RT.

Your input would be appreciated. Thanks.

From the Canon Wiki:

Quote:
The Speedlite ST-E3-RT was also announced on March 2, 2012. It features a new bi-directional 2.4GHz wireless communications with a range of 30m, but is only compatible with the also-announced Speedlite 600EX-RT flash.

The 430EXII is compatible with the ST-E2 which is infrared, not wireless.

But isn't the ST-E3-RT, an upgraded wireless unit?

the B&H website says;
The 430EX II Speedlite Flashes cannot be used with the ST-E3-RT Radio Transmitter. The "RT" in the ST-E3-RT and 600EX-RT's name stands for "Radio Transmission," and are the only two Canon units that can be triggered using Canon's radio transmission. As the 600EX-RT Flash is also a master flash and has both radio & optical triggering modes, if you must use the 430EX II flashes with your setup, the 600EX-RT will have to be ON THE CAMERA in Master Optical mode to trigger the 430EX II flashes.

Just an FYI, and if you have the ability to take back the Canon trigger...and before you are forced to pay for more expensive gear to get it working....

The Phottix Odin is an ETTL wireless flash/trigger system that is very highly recommened; I have the Phottix Atlas II (non ETTL) and I'm very pleased with it.

You can mix / match whatever flash you like; 430EXII, 580ExII, 600 etc.....

And this set up allows you to use inexpensive Yongnuo flashes slaved to the canon flashes...that's a big money saver.

Can I ask: Why do you like ETTL over manually setting lights for multiple light set ups?

Thanks again for the feedback. One more addition to what I had asked B&H before purchasing the 2 - 430EX-II's:

You have been connected to xxxxx at B&H.
ME : This question is with respect to the Canon 430EX II Speedlite. I have the 600EX RT speedlite, and also an ST E3-RT transmitter, which I'm very happy with. I understand the 430EX II can work in slave mode, but I want to be sure that isn't ONLY optically. I'll want any, and all 430's to slave off of RT. Does the 430 all RT slaving? Thanks.
xxxxx: Hello. My name is xxxx and I will be glad to assist you. Please give me a few moments to begin working on your inquiry.
xxxxx: You can set the 430EX II to slave mode and the all slave off the RT.
Me: I thought that's what the description eluded to, but I've had problems strobe slaving in bright conditions and wanted to make sure. Thanks.

So did I pose the question incorrectly to the B&H assistant?

You can have the 600 off camera, but still operate as the master, triggering the 430! (The 430 must be in line of sight with the 600)

That's not going to happen. Two different technologies. One is optical and one is radio wave technology. It's kind of like the tv remote. The radio type will work through walls, and the IR type have to be pointed at the tv.

As rpavich already pointed out, you can use the 600EX RT as a master and use it with the 430EX II using the older technology.

The guy from B&H did say that the 430EXII with work with the RT, but he should have said it will slave off the 600EX RT using the Canons older technology.

I'm sure you can send the 430's back if you got them from B&H and use the money to purchase one more 600.
