Trade magazines

A number of people seem not to be familiar with the trade magazines which would particularly seem to appeal to the audience here. What I'd suggest doing is to take a look at all of them someplace like B&N or another bookstore, buy the one that most appeals to you and read it thoroughly, and repeat until you find the one(s) that best cover your interests (which will change!).

My three personal most favorites, in order, are:

Outdoor Photography - for obvious reasons (I spend a LOT of time in National Park System units and lots of time in Death Valley National Park, particularly)
Shutterbug - for their very practical information and explanations that are not speaking down to newbies; I also like their "assignments" which make me expand the kinds of pictures I take; another member of this list, Deb, has two very different pictures in the September issue on pages 18 and 20
Popular Photography - for the breadth of ads and the great prices for gear; I also particularly like their new products section

Two others are

Digital Photography
American Photography

Except for volunteering at Death Valley, I have no connection with any pub or organization mentioned in this email.

+1 - Outdoor Photography is my only subscription, apart from Arizona Highways, which is like Playboy for shutterbugs.. ("but Ma,I only read it for the pictures!)

I'll agree with Jim. If you're interested in finding locales to shoot or in potentially selling to the local or regional area, you should buy the appropriate state or regional interest mags. Southern Living, Cape Cod, Connecticut Magazine, New England seasonal guides, Chesapeake Life, Yankee Magazine all use unsolicited photos. I'm sure there are tons more, just know these do. And they give you lots of ideas for locations and events to shoot. Rocco

My big mistake with photo mags was ordering more than one yr. subscription before the 1st. one expired. Two went out of business with no compensation and the others tried to re-bill. This year I had to send documentation to the Shutterbug accounting dept. proving that I paid for 2 more years to prevent cancelation. My favorite and very ethical photo mag is SHUTTERBUG. Quarterly mags like Photo Pro etc. are good also.Ya Debs photos are fantastic and how about the one of Paria River Canyon in the Oct. issue?
