I bought a Black Rapid RS – 7 and have been using it for about 3 months. While resting on a bench in a theme park with my D800 and the Black Rapid attached, another photog enthusiasts sat next to me. He asked me how I liked the strap and I responded with very favorable comments. He mentioned to me that he also bought the same strap, but heard of tripod attachment failures, whereas the camera body connecting plate, buckled under the load. Since I'm not familiar with the anatomy of the D 800 and its bottom connection points in relation to the tripod screw does this sound possible? On another forum, a member contacted Nikon regarding this issue and they highly recommended not using the tripod screw mount for anything other than a tripod.

i use a couple of heavy duty circular small rings and hook my Carry Speed strap to one side and short extension strap to the other side of the camera...double support....no need to use the screw in plate

Screws can come loose, I feel much more safe using a clip on the strap lugs.

I personally would not feel safe carrying my camera around by a single screw that could work its way loose.

I have a safety loop attached from my tripod to the camera strap lugs just for safety.

I use a Black Rapid and have never felt that it was un safe but your suggestion of a safety loop is excellent insurance. Thanks for the tip.

I always advise everyone to NEVER mount their camera body to any strap via the tripod socket. It was never designed for that purpose and really should never be used for it.
That said, I do sell such straps in my store, specifically those designed for carrying two cameras at once, but I only sell them with the recommendation to use them only on the tripod collar of lenses that have that feature, never on the camera body.

not only that MT is right ,also carrying camera attached to tripod and wearing it over your shoulder is NOT save

This has all been covered many times on various websites. No manufacturer of any product will give the go ahead to use their product in any way that it was not specifically designed for. To do that would potentially open them to warranty issues and litigation. That does not mean that there will be any problem at all. they are just covering their collective behinds. These straps have been used successfully by many thousands of people. Like any other product they must be used properly and with care.

I use a separate tether from the left strap lug to the carabineer ring so that if the carabineer should become unscrewed the camera is still secured by the tether. Two points of connection is better than one. And the way it's implemented has no impact on the cameras ability to slide up and down the strap. There have been a number of different implimentations of this approach. A search online will show you close to a dozen different ways of doing it, most with slight variations.

A definite improvement. But you are only adding to the expense when you could just buy a $22 OpTech strap and be done with it. ;)

Why woud I want to invest in another strap? I already have invested in the Black Rapid & for $7 more can modify it for safer use. Why spend more?

The shooting experience with a Black Rapid is very difference and superior to an Optech IMHO. Some prefer the Optech regardless of the fact its cheaper and that's fine with me. My family has two Sunsnipers and a Black Rapid and I would never go back to Optechs or any lug mounted straps again. My 60D is always comfortably at my side and in my hands ready for a shot in less than 2 seconds.

Having a Black Rapid strap, these comments got me worried about saftey of tri-pod mount. I'm considering using Op-Tech utility loops. This would allow me to convert Black Rapid strap to securing it on the camera same as a neck strap Any comments on this idea?

I am not sure how you would connect the optech straps to the black rapid strap

Just use the loops and attach the carabiner to the loop(s).

You should send that picture to Black Rapid. They might want to use it in their ads, warning people not to let the camera bounce around while using their strap. :D

You know; what I have seen so far is it’s like it’s only the NIKON camera that claims to have had such a failure. I watched a video on this site that was posted two guys were testing this very problem pulling it from a car bumper trying to stress the screw insert while being attached to the lug screw and there was no failure what so ever. I myself have been using a Black Rapid R-7 for a few years now and I have had no problems yet I have taken the advice of mlsilver to affix an extra strap to the carabineer from B/R

Hey everyone!

I found this thread while researching for our product line. First and foremost I am with Vulture Equipment Works another camera accessory company. We have a product you might be interested in the A2 & A4 camera strap.

We do not use the 1/4 20 mount for reason explained above. The owner actually designed this strap for his use in extreme aviation photography. While it looks big and bulky dont let that fool you. It is made from the strongest and lightest materials in the industry. Plus it is all made in the USA (except the quick release that comes from our Austrian friends and is current US military speced item).

Give us a look and thanks for allowing me to "poach" your thread. If you have any questions please email us at info@vultureequipmentworks.com - our website has some great pics in the gallery as well as videos.
