Today I pulled the trigger and purchased a Canon 6d w/Lens kit from Abe's.

Let me start by saying that I phoned in the order because I had 2 simple questions I needed answered before I purchased;

1.) Will it ship today?
2.) Can I pay with 2 different cards? (I had one of those Canon rebate amex cards to spend plus my regular card)

Both questions were answered YES so i proceeded to place the order. After all of the information was given and the order was done the salesman started the up-sell routine. He started with a second "high capacity" battery. I asked him if it was a genuine Canon battery and he said yes so I ordered it. (I like having 2 batteries, it's saved me many of times with my current rig). He then started with the 5 year accidental extended warranty. He made it sound great so I bought it with the full knowledge that I could cancel it within 30 days for a full refund if after i read the fine print and didn't like it. He even claimed that the warranty was issued directly by Canon which instantly proved that he was lying but I figured i'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

So it's 4 hours later and I haven't even received an email yet acknowledging that the order exists so I call them. As I'm waiting on hold, I finally get the electronic invoice and as I'm reading it I notice that the battery is NOT a canon, and the warranty is NOT issued by Canon. Once the operator answered I told him to cancel the warranty and the battery part of the order. He transfered me back to the salesman who canceled the battery then swore up and down that the warranty company was a subsidiary of Canon which is BS but like I mentioned earlier I had 30 days to investigate and check to see if there are good or bad reviews on the company, plus its not a physical item that I would need to ship back so I left it on.

it is now 10pm 13 hours since i placed the order and the status has not changed/shipped and the battery is still part of the order and I have not seen a credit yet.

Tomorrow will be an interesting day starting at 9AM sharp!!

I really expected more from an established 34 year old company but my experience thus far is like dealing with a bunch of trunk-slammers!!!

Has anyone else had a similar experience with them??

I did a lot of business with Abe's back in the seventies and always was treated very well. But I haven't been back for about twenty years. I put them on the same level as B&H, Adorama and the rest of bunch whose names seems to keep floating around the forum, not to worry.

I won't deal with any dealer that tries to hard sell me additional merchandise. I tell them upfront that if they attempt this tactic I will cancel my order. I believe that the extended warrantees are ALWAYS a bad deal. The sells person gets a a 40% commission. They are masters of persuasion. Risky dealing with a company in Chapter 11 Reorganization that's not in Maine as they advertise. I see some red flags.

Today I pulled the trigger and purchased a Canon 6... (show quote)

Even though I bought most of my gear from them, this probably won't help much. I live 10 minutes away from their warehouse store and buy direct so I don't have to deal with the phone salesman. There is very little pressure if you buy from the counter. Having said that, their prices were competitive and their return policy liberal. I mostly buy from B&H these days since they have a much better selection in stock, and I'm out of state so they don't charge me shipping or sales ax ( yet).

I've done business whit Abes of Maine when they had a showroom in Brooklyn on Coney Island Ave.That was more then 5 years ago.
When I was going to buy my canon I called canon and asked if 42 st photo was approved by them. they said no. so I got my camera at Best Buy.
So, my advice is go to source ask questions then find the place to buy your equipment.

Good luck

I had a horrible experience with these guys. My wife purchased a gift card, and I ordered a Nikon flash..paying the difference in price via CC. The flash never arrived, however my CC was charged. It took 3 months to have them tell us that the flash was no longer available..and the gift cert. had expired!! Once we got that resolved, I changed the order to a camera bag and a high end polarizing filter. The camera bag arrived with a cheap Vivitar filter. I returned the filter and received a filter kit with 3 cheap filters!! Because I couldn't stand dealing with them anymore...I kept the filters. ...never did get what I ordered!!

I've ordered many cameras and accessories from them in the past with no problems whatsoever. However when sandy hit the east coast their warehouse and some stores were completely wiped out so I would be cautious with them now. As someone has mentioned they filed for bankruptcy. I now purchase all equipment and accessories from b&h.

That's what I would do. If you don't get an emailed invoice within just a few hours, know something is wrong.

Most sales people are required by their companies to sell add-ons and insurance. Why cancel your order because of it? Just say your not interested. Works for me.

What the heck are you talking about? Abe's only location is ten minutes from my house and sustained no damage at all as far as I can tell. Its not anywhere near the Jersey Shore. Where did you hear that?

I don't mind the upsale talk but it's the flat out lies that bother me. When this clown tried to sell me the battery, I specifically asked him if it was genuine Canon and told him of the bad experience iv'e had with non oem batteries, he swore that it was. REALLY!!
