Attention ADMIN/MODS: Photo Copyright Info

According the the website http://www.photoattorney.com, specifically the article posted at http://www.photoattorney.com/?p=2663, Federal Courts have recently been awarding damages when infringers remove photographers’ copyright management information (“CMI”) (which can be your name, your contact information – such as your website or phone number – or a copyright notice).

I bring this to your attention because when photos are attached and uploaded to this forum, all EXIF metadata (including copyright information) is removed from the image. Is this something you can change?

Personally, I have stopped uploading photos in my posts, and instead I embed (or hotlink) my images so that my copyright EXIF is retained.

I'll look into it, but not likely to change it any time soon.
The forum uses image library and code that doesn't support working with exif data. So it would take some coding to add this functionality.

When embedding images, please make sure they are not wider than 600px.

That's in the rules, right? That seems pretty small for a photography forum, especially in places like the Panorama thread. Is there any chance we could relax this restriction?

The problem is the page layout gets broken on smaller screens when images are wider than 600px.

It used to be that screens were getting bigger every year. Now, with the mobile devices, it's back to getting smaller :)

In any case, I'm looking into implementing some sort of frames for larger images to allow in-page scrolling.

Once that's done, there won't be any restrictions on image dimensions.

Haha, I just noticed that the Google Ads on this page are over 700 px wide. And every page on the forum has the Ad.

Ads are outside of the post body area. Try slowly shrinking your browser's window and see what happens with the page layout. There is no margin in the ad's area, but there is in the post content area. It's invisible, but it takes space.

Removing margin from the post body would hurt readability. The text would start right at the left edge. Trust me, I spent some time working this out.

Anybody that surfs a photography oriented site on a phone is out of their minds to start with.. :)

But I see what you're saying. It might be interesting to run a poll (can your s/w do that?) and see what kind of devices your users are using. Many webstat programs can tell you that as well.

I do agree w/Jerry that 600px is awful narrow these days.

Hey now, I just read this on my Android phone. ;)

I've browsed around the forum and reviewed pages where I have posted 900px wide images on my phone, on my desktop with a huge monitor, and on my netbook with the tiniest monitor. I've tried slowly re-sizing the browser window (also on the tiny netbook), and honestly the only formatting issue I noticed is that the advertisements in the right column get hidden. Now, I understand why you don't want the advertising in the right column to get pushed off the edge, but IMHO this is a pretty minor issue. (I never click those ads anyway, so no lost revenue in my case lol.)

It's about the text of the posts.

Imagine someone on a 1024x768 screen reading a topic with a 1200px image embedded. The image itself isn't the problem, but because of the image the entire page layout would get stretched.

The text of all posts would span across the entire width (which would be image width + margins + 160px for the left column with all user info). So in our example with 1200px image, it would be around 1400px.

A person reading the topic with a 1024 screen would have to scroll back and forth horizontally for each line of text they are reading.

I think I'll enable the original file access as a half-way measure. So that a thumbnail would be displayed along with a link to access the original image file directly.

This sounds like a great solution, thank you!

I enabled the "store original" option. Let's see how it goes.
