I am thinking of creating a website for my photos. I'd be interested in hearing from those of you who have websites whether you paid to have one created or whether you tried one of the free products you can find on the internet. Other thoughts welcome.

How good are you in web design? Do you know ccs and html coding? I have no knowledge about it and I learn how to design a site from Mark Burrell. (www.BurrellGroup.com) He gives webinar classes of 1.5 hour for 10 weeks and two days later a webinar Q&A of 1 hour.
My site www.LetPicturesTalk.com is still under construction, but you can look at it. The course is based on WordPress and the template are created by StudioPress.com that uses the Genesis widget.

thats the site itself, and i use a link to a flickr account for the pictures, which show up in the site like a part of it.

I have the feeling your site is just a forwarded site and if it is, it has no SEO value for google ranking.

I have a Sutterfly site that is free, has many options as to format, colors and so forth. All are free to visit and comment on it by clicking on my profile - then the link. I am glad to answer any questions.

Depends on what you want to do. Creating a professional looking website can be done using a generator such as Dreamweaver or Front page. If you just want to display your work, Kodak has a site that will allow you to create multiple books. I think this is what I am going to do, because the site is already set up for pics and is easy to use. Give someone the keys to their book, and you have a portfolio generator. You can put up a simple, one page website and link to your book on Kodak. A lot easier than spending hours designing your own!! And I can code in HTML. They made us do it by hand in college... Just a thought, and one of many ways go create what you want.... enjoy.....

Are you meaning that you just want to post them for others to see? In that case you could even start a blog (such as Blogger or Wordpress) or use one of the many free sites available (just a Google search away) such as Wix, Webs & Weebly (all .coms) just to name a few.

If you're looking into selling prints etc . . . Redbubble, Deviant Art & http://www.exposuremanager.com/

Hope this was helpful. I don't print so I can't provide any opinions on that subject.

I use SmugMug Pro and really think it's excellent. They have 3 versions that range from $40 to $150 per year. Depending on which one you select you can customize it to your needs. Let me know if you are interested in one of them and I can get you a discount give you some recommendations for setting it up. Click on this link to view the options http://www.smugmug.com/photos/photo-sharing-features/. If you click on the link below my name you can see my website that I have on SmugMug.

Yes . . . I forgot about that one. I'd like to add that some people want to go as cheap as possible when it comes to having a site like this. But, if you expect to make money, then it's an investment and not and expense. Think about your images and their quality. Are they worth paying for the website? Free would be optimal (some sites offer free for x/months), but even the $40/yr version of smugmug seems worthwhile to get ones feet wet.

Hi. There are lots of options... I use www.vistaprint.com and pay about $18/month. I am totally NOT tech-brained, and I was able to create mine pretty easily, and it was fun! Feel free to take a peek at mine and see if it matches what you're aiming to do. The "Portfolio Images" page is the one that will most likely be what will interest you. www.candidsbykathi.com

I used a free program called NVu. Several years earlier I had attended a seminar in web design using Dreamweaver, which made using NVu a little easier. I also bought a book on web publishing with HTML and XHTML. My site is hosted by StartLogic.com and cost about $5.00 a month.

Websites have different options. What you paid is what you get. Do you want a weblog only to store your pictures or do you want your site to be a money maker?
When people google the internet for a certain subject like "close up pictures" and that is your speciality, you want your web to be on at least the first 3 pages of google. That is called SEO (search engine optimization) When it is your business you need the above and key words and tags are very important. Otherwise see all the other comments who are telling you where to go to look at their website, because when you do a google search you will not find those sites.
My site is also part of my business, because I take pictures for Realtors and their clients, who put their homes on the market. And I want Realtors to find my site.

I actually am in the same boat. I have paid for my domain, and blue host hosting package for the year but can't get dreamweaver down to actually design my website. I also use smugmug which is great for my fine art photos and I can put private galleries for my clients to proof their shots. But I am looking for alternative options as well.

I have to disagree with Ronny as when you type in my web name "Candids by Kathi" in the google bar, my web page does show, although it's a bit convoluded as my actual business name "Capturing Candids" is what shows up. I chose to keep it lower-profile for the time being as this is a second job I am building while still teaching full time for a few more years. I distribute a lot of business cards (just about FREE - you only pay shipping) that are also designed through Vista Print.
Sorry, Ronny!

You do not have to be sorry. And you do not have to believe me.
Tell me how much business you have generated from your site. I am also a realtor for 24 years and have decided to slow down, because I am 75 years. My new photography site is under construction and my teacher will help me finish it for $90 an hour. I have 3 Real Estate domain names that I am going to put on the market for sale. I tell you this because a site does not depends on one google word, but needs tons of words and pages to be succesfull on google, yahoo and others.
