I was asked to clean up this photo. I'm almost ashamed to show it here, but I can't seem to get rid of the noise..I am using Elements 9 and I have Photoshop CS4..The filters did remove some ( it was much worse than you see here) and the magic brush tools were not much help. What else can I do to clean it up. I hate to tell them this is the best I can do. I do have a good rep......Thx much..

The photo is soft so there won't be any definite detail but here are my results.
I used AKVIS Noise buster on your photo
Here is how it came out
It helped some any more and it will be too smooth

I can see why you're troubled. This image is quite beyond repair in my estimation. If you get rid of the noise (most anyway) you'll sacrifice detail. I used Topaz DeNoise. There are other programs out there but again, detail gets compromised.

I too question if there is anything to be done - not every picture nor every problem can be solved.

I actually just downloaded and installed noise ninja & Dfine and I tried Noiseware Pro. Nothing was as good as Topaz. Regardless, the detail is suffering.

I will be posting photo's on here and I welcome any and all types of criticism. How else will I llearn

But I do think it is a very interesting with the topaz de noise
I kind of like the blurred effect :P

Don't fret about your reputation. When things are beyond your control your confidence in explaining to the client is key. Humility and professionalism are key ;)

I use PS CS5. Open the photo in Adobe Camera Raw. Go to the "detail" tab, (3rd from the left). Under the "Noise Reduction" section, set both color and luminance to 50. Be aware that the luminance slider nicely reduces noise, it also drastically softens the entire photo.

If you have a higher res photo this process will work much better.

That cleaned up fairly nicely. Oh yes . . . a higher res phtoo would be so much better to work with ;)

In the words of Clive Barnes, Theater Critic for the New York Times, "You can take a poor play and make it better but you still may not have a good play". What isn't in the original photo can't be made to magically appear. Don't beat yourself up over this one. Explain to your client/friend what the problem is and suggest ways to make a better photo next time. The only caveat here is make sure the dog is still alive.
