I am curious that i rarely see discussions on anyone using their dslr for videos. I have a D90 and a D600 i have yet had a desire to shoot videos, am i the only one? I bought David Busch's NIKON D600,it has a chapter on doing video. It has perked my interest. Please give me some feed back.
Like you I have never even tried video on my D600. To me video on a DSLR is a gimmick and I simply don't have an interest it it. If I wanted video I would look at a dedicated video recorder. ;)
We've had these discussions in the past. Most of us are not interested in video and would rather not have it in our dslr since it adds cost & probably weight. I'm sure there are some here that do use it for videos but it hasn't been a hot topic.
Shooting video of any length, I'd think about a video cam. Not sure of the endurance of the camera to do the job. remember I speak from no such experience, just my feelings. I have and used a video in the past when I was using both.

My first DSLR, a D90, could shoot video. I make a few quick videos when I got it, and that was the end of it. Now I have a D600, but I haven't used the video feature yet.
There is a webinar on shooting video with a DSLR. I'll see if I can find the link.
EDIT: Sorry, but I can't find that webinar. It was strictly for DSLR video.

Exactly. It's like using a DSLR to shoot a time lapse movie. You shoot 10,000 images to make a short movie. That's a lot of use for a little result. I got a Brinno TLC 200 time lapse camera for that purpose.

It would be just a little bit better here at UHH if posters gave their topics specific headings. We are all "curious" and need "help" and "question?" Ever notice the specificity of newspaper headings?
Yes, the topic has been covered before. Folks do great stuff with the video function. Look at examples on YouTube.
Also, there is a DSLR Video forum right here on UHH. Few people post to it though. The best source is really YouTube.
I doubt that it costs much for camera makers to include it. Even the cheapest of so-called point and shoot cameras have the capability.
I just bought a new book that looks promising:
Lancaster, Kurt. DSLR Cinema; crafting the film look with video. Focal Press, 2011(?) $39.95
Don't want it, don't use it. A lot more work and planning involved vs. a still photograph.
There are probably other features on your DSLR that you and others never use. Like a tripod socket. :)
I also feel video cameras make the best video.
I also think we will be able to extract a super quality photo from video shot on a DSLR in the near future. Photo quality video. There will be no difference....

TV shows have been shot with DSLRs, and some Bollywood films use DSLRs.
I have tried out the video on my 5D MK III and it is okay for short video clips.
If I am going to do a video of any length, I'll use my Canon SX40 in the iFrame format. That way I can take it right into iMovie and quickly edit it. The SX40 does a fair job auto focusing while zooming in and out.

I used to have a Canon G10, and I have used it in video mode. However, as I recall it, there was a limit to how long you can take videos. I think it was just a certain number of minutes or it might have been a certain size of the file. Regardless of which, it tranlated into only a short video.
I have both the D90 and D7000, both have video and I have never used it either.

I have taken some short vids with my 7D, mostly of the grandkids playing around. I understand that they used the 7D to shoot parts of an episode of SNL but I don't have the details of that shoot. The video of the kids came out ok but I had my battery grip attached at the time so I felt like I could spare some juice for it. The manual suggests that you pay attention & don't let the camera get to warm so I got the impression that it's not all that 'healthy' for the camera so I limit what I video.
I've never used video. I wish they would not put it in.We could buy a camcorder if we needed it.
