This past April I found out I have a spine disorder called Spondylolisthesis. Apparently I have had this for years but I took a bad fall down a slippery hill(taking pictures) and really pushed it further. I have been in therapy and taking medications but refuse to use any pain killers/muscle relaxers that can potentially change my state of mind. None of this seems to be working=[ I am only 20 years old but feel like I am 80! Does anyone have any suggestions on maybe streches or something of that sort that maybe could relieve some of the severe pain that I have? and NOT chiropracters they scare the begezius out of me!!

it would be greatly appreciated!

My dad was in chronic pain most of his life. He did stretching exercises (gently)and did not sit for long periods of time without getting up and moving around. Before doing anything new, check with your doctor. Have you tried eliminating sugar and gluten from your diet? I'm not suggesting that they are a source of your pain but sometimes eliminating those two can be of great benefit.

Have you considered an inversion table? I have a couple of friends that use one daily and it helps their pain a lot. There not to expensive ($200 or so).

should mention this. dont take it everyday you're body reminds you you forgot to take it about every three days. works like an anti-inflamatory. i just put a real thin pinch in cup of coffee. lil woody taste not bad though. it's a root from the Philippine's. i give about $15 for quarter pound in bulk in a oreintal grocery store.

Forbescat: I might try that it could help reduce something that might change the inflamation maybe! Sitting down is something hard to avoid while I work since I am a lifeguard I end up having to get off stand and walk around! I try to keep moving but thank you!

Dirtpusher: I definately do not drink so that would not be a problem but it is definatly worth a try! I am in pain everyday, work two jobs and go to school so I have a constant busy schedule. I am willing to do anything to relieve it even in the slightest! Thank you!

Bobgattshall: I have actually tried that, someone I work with has one in our back room. He has been letting me use it for the past week and it helps take the pressure off my spine alot!!

Thank you all for your help=]

When sitting, try and sit with feet up, like on a small box. Also, try sleeping with something underyour knees.

Good luck! I know what you mean about chronic pain, s/p auto accident, ended up with six screws and two rods in back, not Fun!

Also, meditation can really work wonders as does biofeedback, lots of books and tapes available, just don't do when driving.

Good Luck!

I have a back injury myself my doc recommended walking, simple stretching and we did a round of decompression treatments,, the treatments were great but its like a car you have to go back every so often for a tune up I don't know if you suffer from the same sort of problems I have ...(mine are 4 discs in a row that are blown, with a touch of bone degeneration disease).. one thing I've learned about pain meds....switch em up and don't take em unless ya really need em i still get relief from the one i use I have friends that seem to be immune to them now because of constant use.

Hi Caitlyn
Sorry about you problem with Spondylolisthesis its a horrible problem indeed.

In 1964 I was in a bad car accident and the end result was the bottom six vertabrea ? in my spine were damaged severely.

I would be in constant pain and sometimes, usually while getting out of a car, something would lock up and the stabbing pains were unbearable. The paramedics used to give me an injection of the same stuff women get in childbirt and all would be ok fro a few days,
Enetually they decided to fuse the bones together but said that it was a 40% chance I would never walk again. I dont bet so passed on that one.
A friend suggested I go visit an acupunture doctor. He examined me , gave me one session with the neeles and I never had a pain again.
Dont be scared about the needles, you hardly feel them but you get a sensation of great warmth and the pain was gone.

Try it It cant do you any harm, and who knows it might stop the suffering.

My best friend, my new life partner who most of the posters know, are hopefully getting hitched in the Spring has a severe knee problem and I hope shes is going to take my advice and get her knee done.

Ian

Caitlyn, you're awfully young for this trouble! I've been
having some trouble too (wear'n'tear tho, older then you
by far)...primary doc sent me to neurosurgeon who
recommends more phys. therapy...yaah, stretches etc.
Not familiar with the med. term you used but hope the
improvement will come from the same recommendation.
(I'd be scared of surgery on "shpines" or "bwains", and
not taking any pills either. Best hopes for you!!!!

Caitlyn,
Your physical therapist should be able to recommend different exercises that you can do at home. Go with what they tell you as they know your situation/x-rays and they can gear it towards your particular situation. I had back surgery in 1998 and have problems once in awhile. But I wear a back brace (soft one) once in awhile and it helps.
