Just Starting...please help.

Hi there! I'm new to the forum. I'm just really starting to learn about manual modes. First picture was on Auto - simply because it was a quick shot of my mother and niece at her first birthday party...I really like to capture natural moments that are some what "in the moment" and something that brings a sense of feeling... sometimes it's almost as if I'm intruding on a "private moment". I like to capture the "essence of the moment". The first photo was taken with a Nikon D40 on Auto Settings. The second was taken with a Nikon D3100 AF S Nikkor 55-200mm lens f/stop 5.6 ISO 200 (I hope that's what I'm suppose to give!) - This shot was taken when my son and his prom date we're looking - just caught them day dreaming and looking at something in the water. I used in camera editing to turn it to b/w. Something just looked "right" about it. Does that make any sense? Anyway - I'm a newbie learning about Exposure. Any comments or constructive criticism would be appreciated...thanks again. T- Ray

Both photos are beautiful. You certainly have a good eye. Especially love the one of your mom and niece. I'm very new so have no constructive advice although judging by your work, you need very little!

Very nice photos. I love the one of the baby...action shots are so much nicer than a posed picture. But what I want to know is what's the dressed up couple looking at? A spider or something? Did you see the webs on that wood? I don't think I would have had my hand on that railing if I was that guy! But all in all. the photos were very nice. I don't know if you could have made the black and white picture a little sharper or not. Might have made it stand out just a little more.

Thanks for the feedback! Sugarpenny - The guy in the second picture is my son. He wears my late husband's wedding band. I've re-married and he requested it. I keep telling that kid to wear it on the right hand - not the left! I did see the spider webs. This pic has had not been through any post production as I have none at the present time. Pic was taken on a bridge over a stocked pond and they were watching a big bass at the surface of the water. I'm tagging your comments to this pic and will try to clean it up in post production. Can you tell me the process for making it a bit sharper?

Both are really beautiful, but the one of your mom and neice is the best to me...very emotional and a special moment captured...some day that baby will cherish that photo...I tend to like a softer misty appearence to my photos except for macro shots, then is when I like the sharpness..You are very good...and I am new here too...so all I can offer is my like or dislike...

I also like the "misty" feel in photos - A friend of mine said that photo shop can produce this effect. She called it a "soft lens" effect. I just put a white vignette around it at the little printing kiosk! I like to make people look the best they can. It's my favorite picture of my mother. Thank you so much for the feed back.

I love the shot with the child and your mom also. You can see a real connection there and a shared moment. In critiques of some of my work, it was pointed out that eyes looking down, as with
the couple, you don't make a connection and you can't tell what they are looking at either. You can really see the difference in your pair of images. I think the couple should be looking either at each other or directly at you.

Thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate you sharing with me! I'll look through some of that set of photos. I know I have some with them looking at me. I just hate an obviously posed shot. Just a personal preference...regardless, I want to take good photos and that's a piece of advice I can use! Thanks again!
