Had the opportunity to try some star trails outside of Tucson recently. The first was just after sundown, two exposures of 2 minutes and 3 minutes with a short break in between (can't recall the duration - but you can see the break in the trails)
The second was taken much later, after full darkness. It is comprised of 4, five minute exposures with only a one second interval between exposures. I "painted" the cactus in the foreground with a flashlight. (IS0 100, f/5.6, Canon 40 D, EF-S 17-85mm lens. tripod, cable release/timer)
