Hi everyone. I am considering buying this lens for my Pentax k30.

Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens.

I know it's not the best macro lens, but I am working within a certain budget and after reading about it,I thought I would ask my fellow Hoggers who have used it.

If anyone has any opinions on it,I would appreciate your input.
Thank you
Annie

I am trying to attach the article on amazon but cannot figure out how to do it.

Why a 50mm they are really ONLY used for things like stamp/coin collections, you really need 100mm or more

Annie the thing you want to look into is the MFD...in other words...how close do you want to get to your subject. I have the 40,60,85 and the 200mm macro lens from Nikon and they all do the same thing...they focus down to 1:1 at different distances.

What you really need is to look for a decent PRE OWNED 100mm

Sigma makes very good prime lenses and the fact that this one is listed as
EX DG means that Sigma is rating it as among their best. The fact that it
is a 50mm is up to you and your pocket book.

HI Cheese, I bought the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro, I absolutely LOVE it. Fantastic Prime lens!!!! I still have to get use to the fact that you need to move to your subject verses be able to zoom. BIG difference sof someone that has never had a prime lens before. Either way Prime you will love.

For $20 Adorama sells a very simple focusing rail that works great when you mount your camera with the Sigma 105mm macro lens on a tripod. I purchased the rail and take it with me when doing shots of flowers.

This is the rail I have http://www.adorama.com/MCFRSS.html it is inexpensive, but works. You can get more expensive rails (just search rails on their site) but as a minumum this will do the trick. Others may chime in on their views but this works for me.

I use this one when I'm doing focus stacking. I think it was 60 bucks when I got it.

I mentioned this earlier: Get a 90 or 135mm 6 element (at LEAST 4) enlarging lens for a few dollars, add T Mount for Leica screw in lenses, add a set of extension tubes or a bellows, and you have a macro set up that will produce knock out images -- for less than a hundred bucks. Nothing automatic about it: you set the aperture in Aperture Priority Mode, then move the camera back and forth for focus.

Come to think of it, your camera IS a DSLR, isn't it?
