I read this quote today... I love it. Seems that we should bear this in mind when critiques get us down , or we feel that our work is not appreciated, or we feel like quitting.

"Listen carefully to first criticisms made of your work. Note just what it is about your work that critics don't like - then cultivate it. That's the only part of your work that's individual and worth keeping." ~Jean Cocteau

Keep taking photos everyone and always be true to your own eye.
cheers

Criticism is a hard think. Not only one has to listen to criticism and listen hard, it's also important WHO the critic is. Look at it from the critic's point of view. If they are just critics then they are worthless POS who never mastered anything. I. personally prefer "If you try to satisfy everyone you'll satisfy none"

Well, I am my own worse critic, but feel the only person I have to be better than is myself. :)

Your photography is as personal as your personality and can anyone be better than you personally? nikondaddy

If it satisfies me then the critic that counts is a happy person.

Even if I learn something new about photography every single day ... I know full well I will never know everything.
One thing I do know is the critique (for the most part) is only about the photo and not the photographer personally. We all see things differently.. and in my opinion thats what makes this all worth while. How boring would it be if we all took exactly the same kind of photos.

Exactly - I can see something in your picture, and mention something you didn't see, and maybe show you something I learned from another photog. My problem is, I can't (Yet) pick up on some things in the viewfinder - I Iknow it's cr*p, but not often why. I guess it's the "Take 100, keep 2 or 3" curse.
I looked up my exposure count on my camera - since 5/1/2011, I have 21,000 shots! I've kept @ 6,000!!! Know what that means? Yup - I keep a lot of cr*p!!

What J.R said - but I had to look at the picture id # on one of the first .jpgs I shot with the camera, then a recent one, and do the math - it's not actually on the camera.

A good critique is honest, to the point, non judgemental, and should be helpful. If people are too sensitive with that, they will not grow and improve. As hard as it may be, take it and run with it with the idea that you will grow from it.

perfect timing. been feeling like that lately. i have a friend that has been a bit hard commenting on my pictures. although i took it as constructive criticism in the beginning, it started to bother me to the point of not wanting to share my pictures. but that didn't keep me from shooting. i love to take pictures of everything and anything..
:)
