How much more research and development will go into f mount?
in Main Photography Discussion

Is this going to be the downturn of the f mount for Nikon, or is effort going to be made in development of f mount products ?
Should us dslr users start to make the transition to mirrorless?

I don’t believe this post will answer my questions though as I attempt to work this out in my mind through the next few months my hope is to formulate a plan.

Apature/DOF
in Main Photography Discussion

Hi ladies and gents,
First post from a semi-experienced beginner, so please be gentle.😊

While shooting today, I realized that maybe I have been looking at apature settings wrong, in that I always used apature as a way to control the cameras ability to shoot in low/bright lighting situations, understanding depth of field is a function of this setting.

I do understand there are lighting situations where you must compomise, and may have to use a lower/higher f-stop to get the exposure right, while forgoing depth of field considerations.

I quess my question is, do most of you approach apature from a depth of field perspective FIRST, and then s. speed and ISO second, if possible, to provide proper exposure while in apature priority? ...

Full frame vs Crop Sensor APS c Aps H
in Main Photography Discussion

This may have been debated ad noseum here but I just watched a "so called" professional wildlife photographer extolling the virtues of his Canon 7D over his 5D explaining to all of us peons that his 7d, because it is a crop sensor, gives him more REACH.
Well I am a professional photographer and have been since the first slr's came out. I have yet to see a 200 mm or a 400 mm lens magically transform into a 320mm or a 640 mm lens.
You DO NOT get more reach. You merely get a smaller FOV (field of view) from a crop sensor using full frame, (based on old 35 mm film) lens. The frame or picture is effectively cropped. You do not get more magnification. It only appears closer because the picture has been cropped down in the sensor.

Handing a camera w/BBF to another person to take a picture
in Main Photography Discussion

Someone made a comment a while back about having the camera set to BBF and trying to explain to someone else how to take a picture of you with your camera.... Right?

A recent question about BBF finally prompted me to check, as my wife would not understand the BBF/spot metering process if I gave her the camera.

SO. On MY camera, a Canon T1i, if I set the mode to the green rectangle (full auto) the focus reverts back to 1/2 shutter press for that mode.
Boy am I happy!
Now I can use the camera the way I want and hand it to someone to take a picture for me without having to explain a lot of stuff! Whoo-hoo!

If you use BBF, check your camera. Maybe it too reverts to a PHD camera when you need it to.

Blurred photos
in Main Photography Discussion

I recently upgraded from a Sony Nex 6 to an A7ii. I never had any issues with motion blur shooting the Nex 6 in Aperture Priority Mode with an adapted 50mm Leica Summicron-M, with or without the in-body flash. My son ordered a Godox speedlight for the A7ii, but since it would not arrive until today, I used an old Olympus FL-36 in manual mode at 1/8 power (bounced at 45 degrees) to shoot indoor Christmas photos. The pictures taken in Aperture Priority Mode were fine, unless someone was moving. Those shots were blurry. I thought the A7ii would be better than the Nex-6. Can someone please tell me what I did wrong? Thank you.

Lens Recommendation Please
in Main Photography Discussion

Seven years ago I bought a Canon SX20 "bridge" camera with a built in 560mm lens. With it, backyard bird pictures has become my favorite hobby.
(These made with SX20)

Last month I was given a Canon EOS Rebel 1000D with a 55mm lens. This camera has several advantages over the SX20. Focus is better, remote capable, etc. To continue my hobby with the 1000D I feel I need a 500mm lens.

I am now 82 years old on a fixed income. I can't afford a really nice telescopic lens for my "fun time". I am hoping I can find something for a lot less money, cosmetic damages is not important.

My problem, what is my best choice lens that fits the 1000D. There are lots of lenses online, however, I know little about what fits the 1000D. Do I need moun...

Kodak Ektachrome
in Main Photography Discussion

Remember Ektachrome?

As I recall, this slide film was recommended for underwater photography because it reduced the "blue" hues that are so prevalent underwater. The attached "guide" was included with each role of Ektachrome film and I thought it was quite helpful in setting up a manual film camera. Ah, the good-old-days!

I stumbled across this document recently while organizing my film cameras for sale on eBay and thought it may be of interest to some folks on UHH.

Seeking to Understand Lens Range vs Performance
in Main Photography Discussion

Hi & Happy New Year to all. I've been studying aspects of photography & my D7200 for 2 months, though not shooting much - too cold & and all my shots since going to Manual have been awful - so much to learn (& I get the idea of starting in Aperture Priority & I will use that when the situation dictates, but right now I want to get one good shot in manual - on purpose!!). So since I'm in study mode I wondered whether someone has done a guide / post on lenses that a novice could follow. I'm aware of the uses of some basic lenses types (fish eye, ultra wide angle, wide angle, medium, macro, telephoto / zooms, etc) & what a lens f-number means in terms of speed & DoF). I also get it that some zooms may not be super sharp at the extremes of ...

Years worth photo backups
in Main Photography Discussion

Hi everyone. I’m looking for suggestions on the best way to seriously start to catalog about 14,000 photos that I have been backing up by just transferring from my camera and cards to computers and hard drive over the years. I have adobe photoshop 11 on a iMac. After loading and reloading over the years I have a lot of folders with random numbers and letters. Some have been named but I still have folders with duplicates pics in them. I have to admit my laziness is obvious in my attempt to catalogue so please be “a little kind in your responses”. With that being said I look forward to suggestions for anyone.

Need some advice
in Main Photography Discussion

I have a 16 year old grandson who is going to the Philippines this summer on a youth service project and he wants a camera to take. Last year he went to Gahana and I got him a pocket camera that he thought was not cool. When he got home it was permanently lost. His mother wants me to find a camera for him in the $250 range. I have always felt it not wise to stand out in a foreign country as a tourist so I like a pocket camera but I'm open to any ideas. Thanks in advance for an thoughts and advice

My camera says it's "busy"
in Main Photography Discussion

I have a fairly new Canon 5D MK iv. When I take a shot, the viewfinder shows a flashing "busy" in the lower left corner. If I try to take another shot, it doesn't respond until the "busy" goes away. It takes 2 or 3 seconds.
It did not do this when I first got the camera, and I have the same cards in it now that I first put in, so it isn't slow cards.
So, either I accidentally set something wrong, or the camera is broken. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what is going on?
Thanks

My shutter is half stuck
in Main Photography Discussion

I put my Nikon d750 in a cheap case and carried it on a plane to our recent vacation. When I bent down to pick something up it slipped off my shoulder and hit the ground (total distance about 6 inches - not a big drop). Later when I tried to take a photo, the image was 2/3 covered with a black shape - rectangular with the corners blocked off. Every. Photo. Sadly, I put the camera away. I was hoping it was the lens (I had my basic nifty 50 on) but upon my return home, I swapped out the lens and had the same issue. Part of the image is visible and is in focus and exposed according to the settings I use but the blocked portion (about 2/3 of the photo) is still there. So it is the camera. Anyone have an idea of what's going on? I imagine I'm go...

Z6 - Something strange?
in Main Photography Discussion

It was very quiet when I was shooting today. I noticed a low noise almost like a fan. It turned out it was coming from the 800mm. It only stopped when I either turned off VR on the lens or the camera shuts off. I just checked and it was the same with the 200 - 500 Nikkor.

Anyone else encounter this.
