They do an annual report on drive reliability based off of their data backup business. The drives they report on are usually large capacity but the the data can probably be extrapolated to smaller capacity versions by manufacturer.

I use: Sabrent USB 3.0 to SATA I/II/III Dual Bay External Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5 or 3.5in HDD, SSD with Hard Drive Duplicator/Cloner Function [10TB Support] (EC-HD2B) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0759567JT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nAIhDbDASZ4EB

I have my master drive in bay one (an internal 1 TB SSD), and my backup drive in bay two (an identical 1TB SSD).

I use an app “Beyond Compare” after I’ve made any changes to the master drive to compare and backup to the backup drive.

It has worked really swell for me.

You can recover deleted images, but its usually impossible to recover images that have been removed by formatting!

In most cases formatting removes the equivalent of the “table of contents” of the images and not the contents (images) themselves. A good recovery program should be capable of reconstructing the “table of contents” and thus making the images accessible again.

Forgetting I was in bracketing mode then wondering why my subsequent shots of different subjects varied so much in exposure.

Bought the Tamron 18-400 several months ago. Did a comparison to my Nikon 18-55 & 70-300 kit lenses at focal lengths of 18, 35, 50, 100, 200, & 300 (tripod, focused on same subject w/both big & small lettering). Ordered (Costco) 12x16 prints of each and compared focal length to focal length.

No discernible difference between Nikon vs. Tamron. So use the Tamron exclusively now.

Of course there may be a difference for the more $$$ non-kit Nikons. But I am happy with the Tamron.

I wear sunglasses that fit over my glasses. When I take them off I tuck one earpiece into the neck of my shirt and they stay there pretty well. BTW polarized sunglasses don't work for shooting with if you have a CPL filter on the lens LOL!

They (polarized) don’t work with some LCDs. 1st time I wore the sunglasses when using my former camera when I rotated to portrait mode the screen blanked out. Thought my camera was broken. Took me a few minutes to realize what was happening. I think it was my Nikon Coolpix 60. No longer have that though.

I had a similar problem on a Chromebook that I bought. I couldn’t get the SD card to stay when using my finger. I tried using (carefully) a letter opener top end that was ~ as wide as the SD card and ~ the same thickness if I pushed it a little past where I could get it with only my finger it locked ever time. Same for removing. I’ve since found a small portable combo can opener screwdriver, etc. tool that works for that as well.

One more interesting thing on this topic. I have Picasa 3 on my computer. Only use it occasionally since I got LR. Picasa will open and print a RAW (NEF) file. The rendition of the shot is very muted colors. If I look at the same shot exported (by LR) as a JPEG the colors are much more vibrant (and true).

I have attached the comparison photos here. No conclusions from this. Just thought it was interesting.

In Texas you might get shot for shooting raw.

I'm probably going to get a lot of flak for this, but if people are just replying to each other with their witticisms that have nothing to do with the original topic (photography) can you do it with a private reply? I get enough junk emails and don't need to open one from UHH and see its of no interest to me whatsoever.

In this thread (as well as many other topic threads) I keep seeing the comment "memory is cheap". I do agree with that (or maybe not cheap (SD cards, & SSDs), but inexpensive). But what about the infrastructure with having terabytes of photos to deal with.

Do you want all of them instantly available and connected to your system on a large storage array or are you willing to have file cabinet full of legacy drives from years past with your older pictures?

And how do you deal with knowing where everything is and how to best access it? Most of the photo editing tools have good solutions for that but if you don't have every photo you have in say LR then that may be an issue. When your good friends John and Marsha ask you if you can send them the pictures you took at their wedding nine years ago because they lost everything in the California fires last year, can you easily do that?

And then of course (their request reminds you) what about backup of all your photos. Protection from mechanical or corruption failures (onsite) or your exposure to disasters (theft, earthquakes, fire, flood, etc. - offsite)

And of course lastly changes in technologies in particular interfaces. USB has for the most part provided reasonable backward compatibility but that may not always be the case. If your computer dies will your next one easily support all your current storage or will you need a nest of different adapters?

So, I'm not advocating one way or the other on jpeg vs. raw or jpeg + raw. I'm just pointing out some of the things that should be considered when making that decision in addition to the artistic considerations.

Funny how so many people don't get that.
And keep wanting to compare apples and cucumbers.

Since what one sees in an editor when using a RAW file is an interpolation of the data presented for viewing, if they really want to compare RAW to JPEG, open two editor windows, one with the RAW in it and the other window with the JPEG in it and have at it. That's as close as you'll be able to get in "comparing" them.

Question: If I were to shoot in RAW + JPEG mode what would I see if I printed the pair without any post processing on either? Of course it would be affected by what was shot, but maybe some worst case scenario?

I just bought this a couple of weeks ago: https://earthlycitizens.com/products/deluxe-vintage-photographers-backpack. I love it.

I carry my D7500 with an attached Tamron 18-400. Also two Nikon prime lenses, 35mm & 50mm connected together with this: https://lensflipper.com/collections/the-lens-flipper/products/nikon-mount, and my backup camera (Panasonic DMC-ZS 60) in its case.

Also a pocket on the front for storing spare SD cards, batteries, etc. A small pocket on one side for my keys, wallet, etc. and below a mesh net for a water bottle.

On the top there is a drawstring opening and room for more storage. On the bottom there are straps for attaching a tripod.

Access to the camera/lenses is either from the front for everything, or from the side just the camera & lens itself.

They are selling for ~$109.95 on the site above. Only negative is it took a couple of weeks to get it.

Check it out.

That’s a great idea - storing on a USB stick and carrying it with you.

For my photos I don’t need 1TB. 256 GB would work for me. So I’m wondering:

Would an SD card work instead of a USB stick? A lot smaller carrying around. Cost about the same.
How would the write/read speed compare to USB?
FAT or NTFS format?

Thoughts?

1. Don't backup on HDs. Use SSDs. They are much more reliable.
2. Use at least 2 drives minimum. Alternate between the drives on a regular schedule (every two weeks). If for some reason a corrupt backup occurs you don't lose everything.
3. Verify the backup, & keep the SD card intact until backup is verified.
4. Have an offsite backup as well. If you get robbed or fire, or some other disaster you can recover all your photos.

I bought a 11" Chromebook (~$200) which I take along as well as a 240 GB SSD. The Chromebook has a SD card port and a USB port. So I copy the SD card into the SSD. If I happen to have decent WiFi I can also upload the SD card contents to my OneDrive account.
