Dave plant yourself some apple trees and wild grape vines in an area that gets nice light at the times you would like to photograph keep in mind hard shadows from the surroundings. Decide before planting where you would like to have different movable blind locations ( for different backgrounds) and you will have a plethora of wildlife to photograph. It won't be long when putting out food will be illegal in Pa, supposedly because of CWD.

Im selling an exceptional Nikon 400mm F2.8 ais series lens with both TC 14B (1.4x) and TC 301 (2x) teleconverters. This is a manual focus lens with no electronic components. With the above components you can shoot 400mm/F2.8, 560mm/F4, or 800mm/5.6.
The lens is in excellent condition very sharp, the converters are in mint condition. Comes in original Nikon case also in excellent condition. Included is mint Kirk lens foot, and a custom made Delrin push on lens cap.

This is a great lens with silky smooth focus, I had the lens back to Nikon a few years ago for a cleaning and check out. I also shoot a G series of the same lens (400) and in terms of image quality I would be hard pressed to tell them apart. I have been using it with an 810 and 850 and it is great. I am asking $2200.00 plus shipping for anyone interested.

I agree with DaveO's sentiment re "beat to death," but for me it's more because this topic doesn't promote any learning or thoughtful commentary; it's just another "chit-chat" thread. Burkphoto recently wrote a similar topic here in which he linked a video to help aid wider discussion. Admin moved his from main forum to links/resources, which is where I expect yours will end up also because of the link you included.

Back in 2016 Sharpshooter did a series on composition. See several of those threads here - if you can get past the Naked Section topics on that page

Discussions on specifics of how to create impact (light, composition, depth of field, angle of view/perspective, how to draw someone into a scene and keep their attention) have been very rare in UHH's main discussion for quite some time, however. I wonder why? Is it because aside from gear specifics and tech talk, the majority who comment in main discussion are already where they want to be with their hobby? And those who are motivated to improve and learn are doing so in other sections of this site - and maybe connecting with a mentor via private message - or have discovered other resources, whether online or books or classroom?

Main discussion forum has become a dumping ground that includes sharing of Facebook photo-jokes, complaints about UPS, and much more that should have been posted to General Chit-Chat. For those seeking a different experience, I urge you to look through "all sections" at the bottom of this page. Examples:

In May and June of 2018, there was a 4-part collaborative effort in For Your Consideration section on the aspects of light. The last chapter, with links to earlier, is here.

The For Your Consideration section has also hosted topics on flower photography, black and white, still life and much more. But that section, like all volunteer-moderated sections, is invisible to new users. You must specifically subscribe and even then, if you are browsing via the emailed digest, you must be logged in to UHH to see postings.

There has often been excellent feedback/critique and discussion in several Landscape Forum topics since that section was created in December. PP Forum has a list of member-created tutorials here. The Commercial Photography section has a lighting tutorial here.

It is sad that most of the volunteer-moderated sections receive very little participation, but that may speak as much to the demographics of main discussion participants as it does to the lack of visibility of the other sections.

Right on Stevey, and President Trump has accomplished all those things with nothing but obstruction from people who swore an oath to obey our Constitution and the laws of our country and then do everything possible to subvert them.

While Dems insinuate that patriotism is somehow racist, while some city councils eliminate the pledge and Betsy Ross-tennis shoes are pulled off the market by Nike.....we are still loyal patriots here in fly-over Texas with even the harvesters flying our US flag!

Great post Stevey, the flag can and should be posted wherever you wish. Lucky guy to live in the great state of Texas. These farmers are the people growing the food, and the the flag represents the millions that have sacrificed everything for everyone in our country. The washed up football player you referenced and other socialist types are free to move out to another country they prefer. If not for the farmers and patriots most of the complainers would not exist.

These two images show how critical the angle of light hitting the throat is when photographing male Rubythroats. This is the same bird all he did was move his head a little.
The lighting is flat it is raining here today but I thought this illustrated that point very well, and may be of interest to some.

As the bible says, those who are hated and ridiculed for loving and following Christ are blessed. We were given ten simple laws to follow, we are seeing the results now in our society of ignoring those laws.

We owe the men and women that fight for our freedom a debt we can never truly repay, it's really not enough to just say thank you.

If it's within your budget you really can't go wrong with RRS tripods and ball heads. Gitzo tripods are excellent as well. For photographing most subjects the RRS tripod and leveling base has been a real pleasure to use compared to anything else I've used in the past 35 years. Best of luck with whatever you choose.

I will be going to a butterfly garden next week. I am not sure which one of my lenses I should take. I shoot with a Nikon D7200. I have my kit lens 55-300, a Nikon 70-300, and a Sigma 17-70. Any advice on which lens and shooting butterflies, in general, is much appreciated.

I use 200mm to 300mm all the time for butterflies, gives you the working distance you need and shallow depth of field to throw distracting vegetation out of focus. I attached a sample of what you can get using those focal lengths this shot was with 200mm as I recall.
