An uncle served on a Canadian Corvette in WWII. His explanation was the toilet was over a pipe that ran straight down the side. If the ship hit a wave, water would shoot up the pipe wetting the butt in the head. Similar to a bidet, but less gentle and a lot colder.

I like to use a mild telephoto - around 100 to 150mm. That allows you to stand back and cover a lot of scene but zero in on what you want. I have a personal thing about getting in other's way. If there is a hill or elevated point, I try to grab a spot in order to shoot above people's heads. I found my f2.8 70-200 works well here.

You're usually shooting at around sunset / dusk so open up your ISO (3200+, depending on your camera).

I usually go with a wide (f2.8 - f4.0) aperture on Aperture Priority. I also use a tripod to handle the longer exposures. I've shot some at 1/4 sec. If you are at a distance and on a tripod, that may only be a real problem if people are walking around.

There are so many "depends" no one can give a great suggestion of where to start. Try, experiment and rely on your camera to do its job.

Because there will be a wide latitude of lighting, I shoot RAW in order to help with the light levels in post.

I recommend something you already have. Either the same model, upgrade, or even used. If this is the back up to a 5DIV, a used 5DIV can be found relatively reasonably. You not only get to use the same lenses, you can have a preferred lens on your primary and secondary lens on the back up. IE; a 24-70 and a 70-200.

While the new 5DV, or any camera, may have new features, you have to think about what features your current body is missing. I know photographers turning out great work with 5DIIs

It's always good to hear a good referral from a satisfied consumer.

I've never used square filters. Are the edges covered/coated so light can't get in sideways and bounce around inside the filter?

Irrelevant. The filters, as well as the lens are all in front of the shutter. The shutter would need to be lose or leak before any leakage would affect the sensor.

This looks much more like a light flare on the front element. That is most easily cured by using a lens hood or not shooting into the sun.

You have received several very intelligent and good responses above. I would add is for you to take a course on the "exposure triangle". Next would be to get away from using AUTO setting and either go full manual or either shutter / aperture priority. Know what the different conditions are and how they affect the exposure. Shooting a summer ball game at noon on a cloudless day gives an entirely different environment than an early morning landscape with puffy clouds.

Knowing the fix will help you today. Knowing the why will help you tomorrow and the day after.

I strongly recommend shooting in RAW or RAW/JPG. Compensating and correcting in JPG is limited. RAW allows a lot more latitude in correction and adjustment.

Remember, my advice and $1.19 gets you a free coffee at the Marathon gas station.

I used direct. SB800 speedlight. Agree 100%. It was too harsh. I was competing with backlit sunlight coming through sliding glass door. I had no other options at time.

If possible, use that "competing light" to your advantage. Turn the subject and back drop so the light is from the side. If the light is too harsh you could try to add some reflected light or muted flash fill. You can always experiment using a bowl of fruit or other still life to get an idea of what will work in your environment. When you think you might have your set up right, call in your volunteers again.

I keep my back drops in my garage. That way I can control my light better. What is hanging on the walls just off camera is irrelevant. When in use I pull them down. When done, I just roll them back up and keep them hanging off the rafters out of the way. (My lawn tractor usually sits there.)

Have fun.

We used to get 2 cents a bottle and 5 cents for the big ones. We would walk the sides of the highway collecting enough until we could buy a fresh pop. On a good day, we could buy a pop and bag of chips.

Good times.

If you want to improve the bokeh, put more distance between the subject and background. Bokeh is the out of focus points. If you are too much in focus, you would get the blur effect. While there is no magical number, I would suggest a minimum of three times the distance of camera to subject to the background. Even more is better. You came closest with that in the third photo.

Second, if I may add. If you are using a speed light, bounce it off a white card or white surface off to the side. Side lighting gives your subjects shadows which makes for more definition. A straight on light (or flash) causes the subject to appear flatter and less appealing.

As a suggestion, you might try shooting these in B&W. That would help mute the colors in the background and make it less confusing. That would highlight the sequins as bokeh. B&W works best though with those shadows to give it contrast and definition. You should be able to change it to B&W in whichever editing program you're using. This is just a suggestion and subject to your own tastes.

Experiment and enjoy.

For most photographers, being in B&H is like a kid in a candy store. While New York is a little too far for me, I do enjoy visiting Roberts Camera in Indianapolis. I would also believe that almost every store has the helpful staff that an on-line purchase doesn't give.
