Foot fetish is my nick name, at least now it is – oh dear, that will teach me. I think SpiderJan solved the mystery. I couldn't figure out why someone would abandon one shoe on the step and not the other one. Looking closer it is the same style shoe the small girl is wearing so maybe they are twinnies or at least they were bought at the same time. Thanks AZ Nikon.

This is an exceptional photo for me. Yes, the expression on the little girl's face makes the image. It looks like you have been spotted and she is holding on to her mom's hand for security but for me, the most interesting part of the picture is the feet. Is there a leg in the floating shoe and if so where is the head that goes with it? Nothing is natural about the position of the feet. Probably the most likely explanation is that it is an abandoned shoe and mom either doesn't want to step on it or kick it aside but I don't know. Photos that make you question what is in the frame are always interesting.

Here are two very good starting points. It is also useful to remember that Street Portraiture and Street Photography are two related but distinct genres. Depending on the situation it might be a good idea to get the candid shots in first, if possible.

Hi Richard, I am a lapsed-regular here that pops in now and again to see what is going on. My watched topics have now topped 700 so I guess it has been a while longer than I thought. My previous contributions here were made using an Oly Stylus 1 bridge camera but I have now followed the usual trail of chasing bigger sensors and more megapixels. A full frame camera is not for me, It just feels like I am holding a brick in my hands so I took advantage of Fuji's year-end cash back offer and went for the X-T2 with the 18 – 55 f2.8 – f4. This is the only lens I have at the moment so I can't answer your question from direct experience. I have only had the camera for about six weeks.

When you say “...a good fit for street photography” are you alluding to image quality or personal discretion? If it is the first then the 23mm has a better reputation but after viewing sample images I am favoring the 27mm. Fuji doesn't make any bad lenses but the 27mm is not one of their showcase models, some people think the colors don't pop but I can't see it and for most of 'street', that doesn't matter much anyway. From the photograph of the 27mm, you can see that it doesn't have an aperture ring, the aperture is controlled from the back command dial. Just something to think about if a ring is important to you.

As far as blending in with the crowd is concerned, everyone that has tried the genre begins by assuming that the more you can make it look like a toy camera or at least a less serious camera the easier it is going to be getting away with the shot and the less chance of a confrontation. There is probably an element of truth in that but one of the You Tubers decided to test this out by going out in London streets with a full frame camera with a 'here comes a photographer' lens on the front. By and large, people were so busy with their own lives they didn't even notice him. Those that saw him didn't challenge him. After a time of not being noticed he decided to stop random people and ask if he could take their portraits and more often than not, they obliged. This is a confidence barrier that has to be gone through and should not primarily influence your choice of lens. Two things about your kit lens, Start with it long and after a while, gradually reduce the focal length to see how close you can get to the action and thus gradually boost your confidence. Secondly, shoot one day with the lens set to 23mm and another day with it set to roughly 27mm and see which angle of view you like best. Also remember that the shorter focal length will have a more dramatic perspective effect when used close to the subject, but not so close it causes facial distortion. Here is a link on the subject.

Wrt to the point about shutter noise, the X-T2 (I don't know about the other models), has an electronic shutter that can be used at more normal speeds down to one second and this doesn't make any sound at all.

For the moment I am not contributing to any sites and I know it is considered bad form to go on one forum and reference another but those that contribute to Flickr, tag their submissions according to themselves; the camera; the lens and sometimes the location. Here are links to real-world examples from both of the lenses you ask about. I hope this helps.

Hi Linda, I have not been around for a while but I looked into the Hog yesterday, saw your topic and thought Thats interesting, I wonder if I have anything that fits€. This is how you get dragged, kicking and screaming, back into the fold (Just kidding). This photograph is probably one of the most boring subjects I have ever taken but it does tick your bullet points 1, 2 & 5 and getting half of them in one photo is not so bad.
Firstly, we have the converging lines effect, albeit going around a bend which makes it slightly more interesting. Secondly, there is the effect where things roughly the same size appear smaller as they regress into the distance. For instance take the car in the distance between the two trucks and bring that same size on the photograph alongside the one at the front and the effect is obvious. The lampposts are exactly the same size and they appear to get smaller as the go into the distance.

I was standing on a bridge so the viewpoint is from above. This produces an interesting effect with the dotted lane markings. We know from experience that these 'dots' are spaced equally from each other both left to right and also front to back and this is clearly visible in the left hand lane. Now look at the right hand lane. Pick two blocks in the foreground that you think make a left and right hand pair and regress these pairs into the distance and they appear not to line up. Similarly, take two in the background that do seem to make a side by side pair and count them forward and they no longer line up. Which is right? I don't know but it sure is interesting. It is obviously a perspective effect that demonstrates something although I am not sure what.

That's good, we don't see it over here but I remember it as a kid. I just had an idea it had fallen before the mighty Coke. Its good some traditional things are still around.

What the others said plus the low camera angle gives the shot more drama.

Wow, I am envious. I believe the whole New Brunswick, Nova Scotia region is pretty dramatic. Lakeland down the South and East sides and Halifax for a shopping op and maybe some starving artists to feed. It sounds perfect.

That's a pity but I am sure there lots of other good places where artists work in public.

I like this, it should be a happy picture but there is something sad about it. Whatever it is, the flowers aren't helping. Well caught.

Thank God it only the ears we have to eat. Good photo, I have noticed on our markets that it as always the fast food stalls that seem to do better than the marketeers.
