OTC jpg = the old days where you sent the film to be processed and prints made by a photo finishing lab. Have you not figured out how to move beyond that point in time?

SuperDuper! for local backup of photos and data files (stored on external drives) and Backblaze to store the same in the cloud. All runs in the background with no need for intervention by me other than to verify once in a while that all is working.

There is a lunar equivalent to the "Sunny Sixteen" rule (shutter speed = 1/ISO at f16); the "Lunar Eleven" rule (shutter speed = 1/ISO AT f11). This will get you in the ballpark for a properly exposed moon. The foreground will require a radically different exposure and blending of the two images.

You have a few things going on here that I think could be simplified. First - you should not be moving files outside of Lightroom! You will loose all of your edit data.

It sounds like you do want to use an external drive to store your current year's photos which you keep on your notebook computer. You are using an external drive as an archive. In order for the external drive to retain all of the edit data, the files on it need to be in a catalog separate from your notebook.

I'm not sure if I totally grasp your situation with catalogs on the external drive (archived by year) but if possible, I would start by merging all of these catalogs together using Lightroom to form one catalog for all of the photos on your external drive. Your notebook would have a catalog that contains only current year photos. At year end, open your merged archive catalog (bringing up your archived photos) and do a File>Import from another catalog...

Select the current Lightroom catalog file from the hard drive of your notebook and select the option to include the original files. Lightroom will copy the current year files to your hard drive and update the catalog of the merged archive catalog.

As far a passing along photos to family, how about getting another external drive and populating it with your best keeper jpg's that anyone could view without Lightroom.

Of course all three sources should be backed up in the cloud.

Sony cameras can pair with the Imaging Edge app on your phone {free download} to write GPS data to the metadata. I have also used an app "GeotagPhotos2" which synchronizes a time based gps log of your phone's location with photos and writes the metadata to your picture files. This requires that you have the camera clock closely synchronized with the time on your phone.

They are good if you have a fast processor, lots of RAM and a fast Graphics Processor. Best to download a trial and do some speed tests.

Some worthwhile data to consider when selecting a hard drive. Real reliability data of a number of manufacturers and specific drive from Backblaze, a cloud based backup provider.

If you convert your RAW files to DNG, be aware that the latest update has a bug that will remove the color tags and rating tags from the files after conversion. Until this is fixed, best to convert to DNG upon import....

I did two weeks in Scotland a few years ago with my Sony a6300 and used mostly my 18-135. Good for landscape, castles, urban scenes

Recent rain in the area has the potential to produce a fabulous wildflower "superbloom" in March. Avoid the weekends when half of San Diego shows up.

Side trip to Salvation Mountain, Slab City, Bombay Beach and East Jesus will provide lots of unique photo opps.

I made the switch in 2014 and at that time, Lightroom had a tool to import an Aperture Library. Unfortunately, it did not import/translate the edit information, only keywords, ratings color pages etc. I just finished a two year effort of editing the catalog of imported Aperture images. What I should have done is export all of my Aperture images as high quality jpg images and import these into Lightroom while retaining the original RAW images for future use should I ever want to re-process an image in Lightroom. That way, the time spent editing in Aperture would not have been wasted.

Before jumping into Lightroom, watch multiple tutorials on how to catalog and arrange your library and pick one that serves your needs best.

I shot these this fall from the Committee boat at a regatta at our club. Used an 18-200mm. It depends upon where the leeward mark is set up with relation to the start/finish which is where the committee boat will be if you will need more reach to get the leeward mark rounding which is where the action takes place.

Given you are on a moving platform shooting moving boats, use at least 1/1000 shutter. I pick an aperture that gives enough depth of field and use auto ISO to set the exposure. Depending on the direction of the sun, you may have to play around with exposure compensation since you have a fairly bright overall scene.
