From my college orchestra conductor: "Never make the same mistake once." From the same man: "Don't play everything so damn fast. Play some things only half fast." I might add: "Don't make every photo so vast. "Make some photos only half-vast."

Wow! We have a reference to "Fux's Rules of Counterpoint." I thought I could read UHH for 100 years and never see a single mention of Fux (Fooks). I taught music for 15 years and never saw a single reference to Fux's Counterpoint. It was mentioned for about 30 seconds in one graduate class that I took. Way to go, Kymarto. We have a well rounded contributor with perspicacity and acumen. He's probably a better photographer than me also. BTW, I proudly consider myself an old methane producer.

We may be looking at a bigger issue here. There is a growing society that cares more about immediate gratification than they do about quality. For example, I know a very successful business owner who used to buy $10,000-$15,000 stereo systems every three years or so. His speakers were the size of small cars. What is his speaker system now? Ear buds. He says he doesn't have time to sit and listen to music, so ear buds serve the purpose.

Nothing points this trend out better than the decline of American symphony orchestras. Starting a few years ago great symphony orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra were forced into chapter 11 bankruptcy. Others have followed such as Minnesota, Denver, and Kansas City. What has taken their place? "America's got Talent," "American Idol," and other superficial forms of entertainment. High quality artistic achievement is becoming a lost cause.

How about American luxury cars? Cadillac and Lincoln are trying to reinvent themselves. Oldsmobile and Mercury are gone. Now we have perfectly functional but unexciting Corollas, Civics, Sentras, and Elantras. This is the world Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Panasonic and others live in. Should we be surprised that sales of cameras are down? Cell phones are becoming the Corollas, Civics, Sentras, and Elantras of the camera world, functional but unexciting. Ansel Adams might be forced into graphic design if he were alive today.

Wow!!! Only $6895 for a Leica M10. Send me a couple of dozen. How do pro photographers pay their mortgage when buying equipment that is as expensive as today's top products?

Here are some lesser known sites in the Utah/Arizona areas. Go to Vernal, UT. From there go to Flaming George. Go to the dam as well as to several beautiful lookout points. Also in the Vernal area is Fantastic Canyon for incredibly odd rock formations; not colorful but really, really odd. McConkie Ranch has some wonderful petroglyphs. You can also take in Dinosaur National Monument. You can google all four of these. In Salt Lake City take in a 20 minute organ recital at noon at the LDS Church Tabernacle on Temple Square. Take a shot or two of the organ. Afterwards go one block east to the Church Office Building and take a tour to the observation floor. You can take pictures of Temple Square, Utah State Capitol Bldg., University of Utah, and many other sights from 30 floors up. To see the Great Salt Lake, go to Antelope Island. Hike numerous trails to the top of the hills. Lots of bison on the island.
After leaving Salt Lake, head south to Highway 92 and then east. This will eventually get you to American Fork Canyon and the Alpine Scenic Loop, and it is scenic. Great photo opportunities at Tibble Fork Dam, Cascade Springs (both a few miles off the road but well worth it). Next stop is at Robert Redford's Sundance Resort. You could spend an entire day there taking photos, riding the ski lift to the top of the ski run, and hiking. Fall colors should be turning at this time. Mt. Timpanogos is spectacular. Then down to Provo Canyon. Be sure to catch a few shots of Bridal Veil Falls on your way to Provo. You can even hike to the base of the falls if you desire. If you go to Arizona go to Seligman, home for all the Route 66 memorabilia (google it). Ken Rockwell did a black and white set of pictures from Seligman. I would use color myself.
Enjoy.
