I just purchased a Nikon D500 camera from KEH camera that looks like new. A friend recommended this camera and KEH. I want to get a back up battery. Any recommendations for off brand batteries, other than Nikon or should I stay with the Nikon battery?? Thank you.

I’ve never had an issue with Nikon batteries, even those I’ve had for several years. Had one incident where my D750 would fail to fire after pushing shutter button. It turned out to be an off-brand battery that would not run the camera after reaching about 60% full.

I recommend the Nikon Z8/Z9 Wildlife Setup Guide by Steve Perry. Even if you don't do a lot of wildlife photography the guide contains lots of information on camera setup that is useful for more than just wildlife photography.

You can purchase his guide at https://backcountrygallery.com

First, you have them backwards. You are a photographer. You learn Lightroom first for 90% of the work. As an instructor, you learn Lightroom Classic (forget the others). YouTube is great but KelbyOne may be your better choice as they approach it as you are photographer and as you develop how to use Big Brother PS when needed. Do not fall into the trap that PS Camera Raw is identical to LRC. Yes, they run on the same engine. No, they are not the same. Send me a PM and I will send you a booklet I wrote for a refresher course last summer.

When you say, “(forget the others),” do you mean forget Lightroom (for mobile devices such as iPhone and iPad) and just stick with Lightroom Classic? Thanks.

Hi folks,

Anyone attending one of the Tangerine Dream show and intending to take pictures ? If so, I would be interested in seeing any of those. Been a fan since 1985 or so. Still listening to their music. Would'nt mind older picture too !
Last night, they were in Miami. Next stop in Ashville NC.

Regards,

Eric

Here are the dates and locations.

I had no idea they were still doing concerts. Awesome! I was a huge fan as an undergraduate at university many decades ago. Enjoy!

Rich - thought I'd throw my 'tuppence' into your ring, even from t'other side of the Atlantic !

I've used Nikon DSLRs, but effectively 'went mirrorless' in 2012.

1. In terms of future proofing, go mirrorless rather than the D780.
2.If your prime motivation is to be able to capture movement then look past the Z6ii to the Z8 - best AF (along with Z9) at present on a Nikon mirrorless. Be prepared to explore the means of paying for it if you need to - save a little longer - what can you sell that you don't really need/use?
3. While F lenses will work on Z cameras, you would need to spend on an FTZ which you may not use for long. Take a look at your current lenses, explore which might be best 'in the interim', but start now to learn about Z lenses with Z cameras and plan for future redundancies with 'F' and purchases with 'Z'.
4. Bit of good thought and planning now may help prevent any damaging effect upon your wallet !

You may already be familiar with Thom Hogan, but you can't really beat his advice about 'all things Z' if you immerse yourself in his website ....... https://www.zsystemuser.com/

Get yourself in the right frame of mind about 'mirrorless' and have lots of fun as you move into new territory whilst using your long-time Nikon knowledge and familiarity - wish ya' luck from afar !

Yes, if you can afford a new Z 8, you would have much more available in terms of AF, FPS, etc.

If you’re able, why not rent a Z6 II and/or Z7 II to see which works better for you in the conditions you like to shoot?

As my Z8s have been serviced for the lens mount issue, I have posed the question if this included checking/servicing/repairing the camera strap lug. I will post their answer here when I receive a reply.

Awesome. Thank you.

The answer depends on how well he understands the folder system. My response would be, "Don't use collections, use folders."

That will leave his options open to use almost any program besides Lightroom to accomplish his work.

If he wants to use collections later on there are lots of options besides Lightroom.

Well said, and succinctly so!

Understanding your computer's file system is a prerequisite for understanding collections.

Trying to explain collections to someone who does not have a clear understanding of the file system is not going to work.

One of my colleagues had a term for such bewilderment, "It's like cows watching a passing train."

This is fully understood … however, does that “intellectual show” really help OP? Like I said to OP, ‘There’s a whole lot more to this story … ‘ I find it very easy to present what you think you know so some people cannot understand. You have to be much more clever to explain in such a way ‘you can explain it to your grandmother’ (A. Einstein).

Not really a clear understanding of how it works. Folders are based on the directory structure on your computer when you copy a file into a folder the operating system looks for free space to save that file to and creates an entry in the FAT, (file allocation table), that is a pointer to the location where the file is stored. When you import into LR if you use the “add” option it creates an entry in the LR catalog with a pointer to that location. If you “copy” or “move” when you import it puts the file in whatever folder you specify and adds an entry to the catalog. You’re right that that file remains untouched. All of the edits are also saved to the catalog and when you pull up an image LR applies those edits so you see the edited image. If you opened that image in another photo viewer you wouldn’t see the edits. Collections are NOT virtual copies. They are simply pointers to the same image file in the folder. Collections simply allow different virtual groupings of images. Whether I open an image from the folder or collection it is opening the exact same image with the exact same edits. If you edit an image in a collection then those same edits will apply if you open the image from a folder. Now one thing you can do in LR is create a virtual copy. All the virtual copy does is add an entry to the catalog that points at the same image file but it also creates a separate copy of the edits for the new entry so you can make different editing choices. It’s a great feature because it allows you to try different editing choices without affecting your previous edits.

I am looking at Lr Classic. I have watched several videos which explained several approaches to organizing your photos.
One person stated don't use folders, use collections. Can someone elaborate?

My understanding is that Folders vs Collections is a matter of terminology. “Folders” refers to how you’ve organized your original photos on your internal or external hard dive or SSD. “Collections,” Collection Sets, and Smart Collections refer to how you’ve organized virtual copies of your photos WITHIN Lr. When you edit within Lr, only those virtual copies within Lightroom are changed, and the original photos within your Folders remain unchanged. When you “move” photos into Lr, you’re just creating virtual copies within Lr that you can now organize into various kinds of Collections and then edit those virtual copies. Using “Collections” is a great way to organize WITHIN Lr. There’s a whole lot more to this story, but this is a primer in response to your question.

So, no one can tell me how to move that LCD monitor? It's packed in its box now, so I can't try it, but it would be nice to know.

I did. See my post …

"Read the manual" is not an acceptable answer!

How do I release the LCD monitor to move it around more? One of the reviewers called that something like, "ridiculously complicated." I went through several hundred pages of online manuals searching for "monitor" and "LCD," but I couldn't find any info about how to flip it out.

It’s easy! Pull LCD screen rearward using tab in upper left hand corner. Then, pull straight backward. Gently pull the right side rearward which releases LCD screen further and also allows left-to-right tilt. To return, push entire screen back toward camera until it clicks!
