Great original posting! For anyone in Florida, or visiting Florida, I suggest a stop at Clyde Butcher's gallery in Naples, Florida. A tour of his darkroom is fascinating. On the Internet you can find some videos of him creating his wall sized prints, but I found actually being in the room and seeing all of the large trays and special equipment up close to give me more appreciation for his process.

The following quote from CVS explains the limits a little bit. "We will not digitally alter or change a person's shape, size, proportion, skin or eye color, or enhance or alter their lines or wrinkles or other individual characteristics."
This doesn't appear to affect necessary processing of a digital image, just "manipulation." According to the article, CVS is one of the largest sellers of beauty products and the large beauty supply companies appear to be willing to go along with CVS' requirement. To get CVS' stamp of approval, I guess whoever does the photo shoot will have to provide RAW images as well as the processed image.

Just thinking logically, without having access to the agreement, if the Court approved the settlement then the Court must have ruled the photographer has the rights; otherwise, the photographer's agreement to give 25% of proceeds from the image to conservation groups wouldn't be valid.

You could try digiscoping. A search on the term will give you the details on it. Swarovski has a lot of information on their website.

It depends on what I'm shooting. If I'm out shooting birds in flight or action sports I will take some test shots and "chimp." After that, I seldom look at the back of the camera, in fact review is turned off. There's too much chance of missing a better shot while chimping the last one. If I'm doing landscapes or architectural shots, then I will check after each shot, primarily looking at the histogram.

I think this is something to be aware of. A quick Internet search for "tattoo copyright infringement" shows there have been, and are on-going cases out there. They will probably continue as the use of tattoos increases.

If you plan a trip, you need to monitor this closely and be prepared. A number of years ago I was out of country on a business trip when the carry-on rules were changed in response to an attempted terrorist attack. I was able to purchase a very nice piece of luggage, but grossly overpriced, at an airport shop and separate out for luggage check what was suddenly illegal to carry into the cabin. Luckily, I had arrived at the airport early enough and found out about the rule change in time to buy the luggage before the shop ran out, which it did. I think a Pelican case and insurance may become my regular travel mode just so I'm not taken by surprise, again.

You said, "Surprised that American friends on here think ..." I don't recall anyone here stating they "think" that the individual who perpetrated the terrorist attack in Sweden was planning on jumping on a plane to come attack America. The concern seems to be that some here think it a possibility that those who control what can be carried into the cabin of an international flight may think that terrorist may use alternate routes to get to the US. This could result in additional restrictions on what can be carried onto a commercial aircraft. The question was about alternatives for having access to photographic gear when traveling internationally, if such restrictions should occur. There were some good suggestions from forum members, such as ship ahead, rent gear at the destination, take a boat, pack the gear in a secure case and check it, etc.

Your response to what was a simple, and reasonable question appears to me to be a sly attempt to impute a nefarious motive to the original questioner and some of those who responded to the question.

It makes me question why you are on the forum. I, for one, plan to just ignore any further postings you make.

Not exactly tongue in cheek, but as a retiree with more time than I used to have, I'm considering a return to the old days of cruise ships and trains. That will make a trip take a lot longer, but there are some advantages.

To me, it comes down to the image. Sometimes the TC lets me get a shot I couldn't otherwise get. My neighbor is an award winning photographer who usually shoots with a 400 mm prime and either a 1.4 or a 2x TC. One of his images was just selected by Audubon for the 2018 calendar. It's great to review all of the specs and charts and look at all of the reviews when deciding whether or not to buy a TC, but it does come down to the image. Regardless of what the charts and reviewers say about the TC, if the image is sharp, it's sharp. Much of it depends on the photographer's experience and how much practice has been put into using the gear.

For those interested in using teleconverters Arthur Morris provides some insights. Here's a presentation he did at B&H. It takes him a few minutes to get into his presentation, but I've found sitting through it to be worth my time. I have gotten some very good shots with a 70-200mm and a 2x converter following Artie's suggestions.

I too write the purchase date on my camera batteries, but only use the date as a guide. I use only OEM batteries for my DSLR. On the "battery info" menu of my Canon I can check the current charge percentage, the number of shutter releases, and the charge performance of the battery. Once the charge performance gets too low (as soon as I see it drop to one bar on the scale for me, probably different levels for different photographers) I know it's time to recycle that battery. I don't know if a 3rd party battery provides the charge performance information or not. How long I keep a battery in service also depends on whether I'm taking short local trips or planning a long trip into a remote area. For a vacation, or planned photography trip I'll recycle any battery that has been at two bars on the charge performance scale for a while. The available information and scale may be different for your camera.

One of the great things living in the digital photography age is not only are the camera sensors and processors improving, but the processing software keeps advancing. As your skill with the software improves you can go back and take another pass at some of your favorite images and with your improved skill and the software advancements make some real differences in the look of the image.

I do segregate my family and personal photos from what I consider my "art" photos. I'll dump a slightly out of focus art photo in a second, but an out of focus, blurry, under-exposed photo of one of the kids blowing out the candles on a birthday cake is always a keeper. It's those that I will work on with every available software function to make as good as possible. I've even been known to smooth out lines in grandma's face before sharing the photos.

Yep. Don't need a shower, or shave, when heading to the field.
