We really like Viking River, but wdross gave good advice. Plus, river levels (too high to get under bridges, too low to navigate)can dictate itinerary changes which usually involve tour buses. If you can’t climb the bus steps, you’ve got real trouble. Also, the Viking ships don’t always dock “downtown” and a lengthy walk or bus ride might be required to see the local sites.

Pay heed to rgrenaderphoto, above. In towns, things are closer than you are used to. So, I travel with two compacts and a DSLR with two lenses. Yeah, overkill. My main “ out and about exploring” is a RX100 m3. Unobtrusive, pocketable, nice quality. In the small backpack I carry is my rain jacket, my old monopod (which doubles as a tabletop tripod), and a Panny ZS50 that comes out only for the shots requiring a long reach or as a backup camera. The DSLR comes out when I go back to a location specifically to get that wall-hanger image. Two lenses are a super wide and a general purpose 18-300. I guess I’m saying that exploring and serious photography are two different things.

We like to go there a couple times a year. We take a loop south from Asheville to Brevard (white squirrels), then out on 64 (waterfalls), Cashiers, Franklin, Bryson City (Great Smoky Mtn Railways), Cherokee (nice Indian museum and a casino), then maybe Maggie Valley, we think Waynesville is a neat town, then back to Asheville. Loop is more than a day trip, but just the north or south legs could be. Most waterfalls are a moderate hike, but a couple (Dry Falls !!) are right next to the road.

On1 is a nice program after making significant improvements recently. Watch the videos, download the trial. Yes, there is a learning curve.

A point to consider: While On1 touts the “no subscription” approach, the cost for a stand alone copy is only slightly less than a year of Adobe. And, if you opt for their “perpetual license” (free upgrades as they come out), the cost is just about equal to the Adobe subscription. Until Adobe raises the rate again.

In my opinion, On1 does some things better than LR ( I especially like that you don’t have to Import, and the local adjustment brushes work well), LR does some things better than On1 (particularly in the Print tab). It will take you some serious time and effort to learn enough to compare the two and decide which one fits you better.

Hello, Vicky! The wife and I are coming your way this summer. Going to spend about 10 days in the Yorkshire area to relax and take photos. A day trip to the coast, maybe hop a train to Lincoln. Always hoping to hear of photo locations where I’m not behind 500 other tourists. We have plenty of time to go west, if you know of superb photo ops.

As a veteran of several river cruises, I’d suggest using a good pocket-sized machine for the tours, excursions, and initial visits to towns. Something with a reasonable wide angle to short telephoto zoom. The tourist swarm is at its worst in August, and the chance of getting that National Geographic cover shot while on a tour bus is about the same as winning the lottery on the first play. But, also pack some serious gear for the free time, especially in Prague and Budapest, or while cruising. Use the tour to learn what you want revisit, then, time willing, pull out the good glass for your “not on the tour” time - talking sidewalk cafes, dawn and dusk and night shots, and specific scenes you decided to try once the tourists were in bed. What lens to take? I’ve found I rarely need a long lens but frequently use a wide angle. When with the tour, I carry a RX100 and a pocket Panasonic with a long zoom (just in case). For “ off the tour” time, I cram whatever I can into whatever space the wife has left me. Never a long zoom, always a fast wide angle. 35, 50, 85 primes, maybe. If space is really tight, maybe a 24-150(ish) zoom. Best advice I can give - nothing beats walking Prague early morning or late evening with camera gear you really like. BTW, I love your taste in music.

The response from Joe was dead on. After a few thousand shutter pushes, you might start thinking “If I had a button I could push instead of diving into the menu”, or “I need a larger buffer for burst mode”, or “If only this lens was (wider, faster, longer)”, or any of a thousand upgrade reasons. But, unless you just need to satisfy a GAS attack, take the time to find out what features you want/need, then look to see which machine will help you out.

Many thanks to all for the wonderful suggestions and photos. You’ve filled my schedule. Now, who do I see to make sure it doesn’t rain while I’m there?

I’ve just booked a trip to York for this summer, about ten days. Anybody have suggestions for camera-friendly day trips? We’ll have lots a free time, and would like to find photo ops in the Yorkshire area. Preferably without the tourist hordes. We’re going to spend a day around Whitby (with the tourist hordes), but would really like to get as far away from tour buses as possible. I’m guessing some of you have favorite spots in the region. Thanks in advance for your help.

Bought a flash and the transmitters a while back to pair with my old SB600 (and as a back-up). Everything works just fine, but good luck trying to read the manuals. Even posted here on UHH asking if anybody had translated them into comprehensible English (nobody had). The system is very easy to use once you figure it out.

Completely agree with 47greyfox. Luminar 2018 for Windows is not ready. Lots of missing features and I've had several crashes. And slow -- so slow. I really like the concept of the program, though, and hope the mid-January updates will make it a useable option.

Most restaurants in Switzerland pay their wait staff a full wage. No obligatory tipping, but higher prices.

Beautiful night shot. Never crossed my mind to do waterfalls at night. We were there last week hoping for better fall color. Oh well. Next year. With a strong flashlight.

Thanks to all for the thoughtful feedback. What a great set of responses! End result -- a monitor upgrade and a calibration device are on the way. The comment I enjoyed the most was "does the image look the same with left and right eyes" (actually, no, due to some eye surgery a while back. The right eye is about a half-stop brighter.)

FYI -- The monitor upgrade was needed anyway. You sold me on using a calibration device with the "to an industry standard" logic. It never occurred to me that others may not see my images as I intended. (Duh)

Thanks again.
